My love for our uniqueness as black people is one without compromise – our hair, skin, and distinct anatomy is worth flaunting any day. More interesting is the beauty of our diverse shades. From the darkest to the fairest, our unique skin tones are priceless treasures.

My assertion is, of course, not universal as our beliefs have over time been influenced by several varying factors. Society has set a certain abstract standard of beauty that places more value on a certain skin tone and this has led to a surge in the number of people ‘toning’ their skin to meet these standards.

It is then expedient that we have conversations around skin toning and its potential consequences and that is what this docu-story is all about. It’s a non-judgmental conversation that would not criticise anyone’s choices. Rather, it is about educating ourselves so that we are fully aware of the potential consequences of the choices we make.

It’s also important that we acknowledge the pressures that people face from simply engaging on social media which leads to certain hasty decisions. This conversation will help people make more informed decisions moving forward.

The question concerning why we do the things we do especially as black people (a somewhat marginalised/oppressed race) also needs to be asked. So I think it’s important we explore the rationale behind our actions rather than trivialising them.

Why are there certain standards of beauty that seem to take us farther away from what it means to be black? Why is it that straight hair, clearer skin, a particular figure, a certain dimension of facial features are glorified over black body features? Why are we putting so much money into the pockets of people who don’t look like us but want us to look at them?

These conversations are important so that we can raise a generation that recognises the value of self-love so that we can embrace our flaws, our uniqueness and make a proper, informed choice in the future. Furthermore, it’s important so we don’t project our insecurities, societal “standards” or how we feel onto the next generation.

We also need to mind what we say and the things we glorify because they can have a lasting effect. Bleaching has been going on for centuries, so it’s something that has penetrated our culture and who we are as blacks.

I think it’s an important conversation to engage in and more importantly in safe, non-judgmental, non-critical places.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, says he stopped attending a branch of a church in Abuja because the pastor was always attacking the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

Adesina said this in an article on Thursday titled, ‘This Kumuyi is simply different’, which was written in support of a statement by the General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor William Kumuyi.

Although Adesina did not state which church he stopped attending, his public profile states that he is a member of the Foursquare Gospel Church where he was ordained a pastor and has attended since 1988.

In the article, the President’s spokesman said it was unfortunate that some pastors had turned their pulpits to soapboxes upon which they spew hatred.

Ikoyi building: Sanwo-Olu declares three-day mourning

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has declared 3 days of mourning over the Ikoyi building collapse, which occurred on Monday.

The state government claimed that no fewer than 32 persons are believed to have died in the incident.

This was contained in a press statement by the Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, on Thursday.

The statement read, “All flags are to be flown at half-mast in public and private buildings and official engagements cancelled during the mourning period.

“The Lagos State Government, once again, commiserates with all those who lost their loved ones in the unfortunate incident.

“Governor Sanwo-Olu has visited the site thrice to encourage the rescuers and console relations of those who are believed to have been trapped in the 21-storey building.

Osun 2022: PDP kicks, as NURTW endorses Oyetola for 2nd term

The leadership of the Osun State branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers on Wednesday endorsed the state governor, Adegboyega Oyetola, for second term in office.

Speaking at the endorsement rally held at the Nelson Mandela Freedom Park, Osogbo, Chairman of Osun NURTW, who also doubles as South-West chairman of the union, Mr Olalekan Folorunso, explained union decided to endorse Oyetola after assessing his remarkable achievements in the last three years.

Folorunso, who was joined at the event by the Chairman of the Lagos Council of NURTW, Musiliu Akinsanya, added that the union had benefitted from the government policies.

He noted, “The union at its monthly meeting highlighted the performance of the governor despite the little resources available to the state; hence our resolve to support our governor to lead the state for another term of four years.”

TV host and media personality, Stephanie Coker has reacted to the loss of lives at the recently collapsed Ikoyi building in Lagos.

Recall that the high-end Ikoyi 21 storey building collapsed days ago, entrapping many people underneath the massive rubble, and rescue efforts have been ongoing ever since.

 Stephanie Coker has said that lives need to be more fully protected across Nigeria, than before.

According to her, she could sleep while thinking about the people still trapped under the rubble of the collapsed Ikoyi building.

Taking to her Instagram Stories hours ago, she wrote;

“We are living haphazardly in Nigeria and subjected to so much emotional trauma.

We have to pray about everything because bare minimum standards are nonexistent in most sectors in Nigeria. Citizens have become desensitized to some of the most horrific accidents. It’s not normal for a trailer to fall on a car, it is not normal for a building to just collapse…

I couldn’t even sleep last night just thinking about the human beings trapped in Ikoyi. There needs to be more value placed on ALL human life in Nigeria.”

Burna Boy shaded a lady who accused him of using the sufferings and plights of Africa/Africans to enrich himself.

The lady identified as Dera in a lengthy post noted that Burna Boy always tries to paint a bad and dilapidated picture of Africa in his song with no atom of positivity.

She described this as a strategy adopted by Burna Boy and some other artists to gain massively. According to her, Fela didn’t paint Africa bad in order to send his message and also diversified into other spheres; such as praising women and so on.

The self-acclaimed African Giant noted that she deserves all the worst in life and the afterlife due to this statement.

Odogwu also noted he would have been much richer if he had embraced other genres of music.

He wrote:

“First of all ain’t no ‘WE’ you live in the UK and probably come to Africa for holidays. You and anybody that thinks like you deserve all the worst in life and the afterlife. You think I need to sing about the truth of African suffering to gain? Dumb bullshit takes more away from me, my pocket and my family to sing the truth like I have always done.

Nick Lachey won’t be grabbing a copy of Jessica Simpson’s Open Book anytime soon.

The 98 Degrees member, 47, spoke to Andy Cohen on his SiriusXM show Radio Andy and revealed that he has not given his ex-wife’s memoir a read — and that he simply won’t be doing so in the future.

“You’d be shocked to hear that I have not nor will I ever read it,” said Lachey after laughing at Cohen’s question asking if he had read the 2020 memoir.

“Here’s the thing, obviously I knew the book was coming out. I lived the book,” he added. “I know what the truth is so I don’t need to read it or read someone’s version of a story. I know it. I lived it. So no, I never read it.”

Simpson, 41, and Lachey married in 2002 before splitting in 2005 and officially divorcing the following year. They had been dating for nearly three years prior. Their marriage was the focus of reality show Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica, which aired from 2003 to 2005, shortly before their split.

During the interview, Cohen, 53, also mentioned a biopic-like series based on Simpson’s life.

“I’m thrilled where I am in life and that was 20 years ago so it’s honestly the last thing on my mind these days, unless someone brings it up,” Lachey said about the relationship. “I understand why people want to ask but it’s so not my life anymore that it’s not even on my radar.”

“She’s doing her thing, I’m doing mine,” he added. “And that’s the way it should be.” (Lachey is now married to Vanessa Lachey and they share children Camden, 9, Brooklyn, 6, and Phoenix, 4.)

Among some of the things about their relationship in Simpson’s book is a handwritten entry from her “divorce journal.”

“I didn’t want to be married any longer but I was also afraid to be alone with ‘no one to call my own but the night,'” she wrote in her black Mead notebook. “The house is hushed. Everything is still. I sit in solitude. To cry. To feel alone….” 

“What a shame to find that which is or who is to blame, because in this world, deceit becomes a crippled hearts cane,” she added, before writing later, “So Nick, u r with another already? Seems that you forgot the love you spoke to me…”

She also wrote in her book that the two slept together one last time before they finalized their divorce.

“I just wanted to know what he thought of me now, because at that point I had no idea,” she wrote in her book. “I watched him portray himself as a victim, casting me as this selfish person.”

Simpson recalled how he came over and that “despite my anger, I missed him.” She explained that the two listened to Lachey’s album and she knew that all of the songs were about her.

“I was numb, just blank. How do you react when you find out you have apparently hurt someone so deeply that they feel entitled to such actions? I felt manipulated into some revenge fantasy, but I had put myself in this situation,” Simpson wrote. “I didn’t know any other way to make it better, so I slept with him.”

“He didn’t stay the night. I was relieved because I could feel his hate. The whole situation was very dark,” she later wrote. “When he walked out the door, I knew I would never see him again.”

After the book first dropped in early 2020, Lachey spoke to Today about it, saying he didn’t “know what she said or what she revealed there.”

“I’m certainly happy for her and her life, I know she is happy for us,” he said at the time. “There’s definitely a mutual respect there, so that’s, you know — obviously it was a long time ago; we’ve all moved on.”

And, in an interview with PEOPLE before the book dropped, the “With You” singer called Lachey her “first love.”

“We were young and pioneering our way through reality television, always mic’d and always on,” she said then. “We worked and we were great at it but when it came time to being alone, we weren’t great at it anymore.”

Simpson is married to Eric Johnson and shares daughters Maxwell Drew, 9, and Birdie Mae, 2, and 8-year-old son Ace Knute with him.

Debola Williams took to social media to celebrate his wife, Kehinde Daniels , the daughter of former Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniels, who adds another year today.

In his celebratory post, the 35-year-old  recounted how he met his wife, how their hearts connected from the moment they first met and how he has continued to fall in love with her afresh.

Debola said 4 months before their paths crossed, he said a simple and short prayer to God asking “where will someone find a wife in a pandemic year?”

According to him, that same month Kehinde posted a wedding programme her father had designed in anticipation of her wedding. The couple tied the knot in August 2021, in a grand ceremony attended by the movers and shakers of the society.

He went further to thank his wife for being a committed professional at work, a kind woman and loyal friend to him, a partner in purpose, a mother to our household, building and making it beautiful daily.

Here is his message to her:

“Dear Baybee @kdlagos, Four months before our paths crossed I asked God in these words, “where will someone find a wife in a pandemic year!?!?!”

Angelina, who has worked with guns on set on many occasions both as an actor and director, said that 'certain procedures' have to be taken 'very seriously', when asked about the accident during a recent interview with The Times.

She said: 'I can't imagine what these families are going through. At this moment, the grief and the tragedy of that accident is quite overwhelming. 

'I've always been very careful because I've had to work with guns a lot. The way I've worked or checked when I'm directing, there are certain procedures. You have to take it very seriously.'

Will Smith recently spoke candidly about the emotional trauma he endured, that he once contemplated killing his father to avenge his abused mother.

The actor spoke about this in his upcoming memoir, Will, in which he share details about his childhood and his strained relationship with his dad, U.S. Air Force veteran Willard Carrol Smith Sr.

In an excerpt published by People magazine, Will said his father was a complex man who was “at every game, play, and recital,” but also a “violent” alcoholic who terrorized his family for years.

“When I was nine years old, I watched my father punch my mother in the side of the head so hard that she collapsed,” he wrote. “I saw her spit blood. That moment in that bedroom, probably more than any other moment in my life, has defined who I am.”

Will added that this caused him so much pain in the following years, as he regretted not standing up to his dad and protecting his mother in that moment.

Fela Anikulapo Kuti has been honored with a blue plaque in London

English Heritage presented him with the accolade, and a blue plaque was erected on the house at 12 Stanlake Road in Shepherd’s Bush, where Fela first resided when he came to London to study music.

This honor is all the more meaningful because it comes just two weeks after his 83rd posthumous birthday.

Fela Anikulapo Kuti (1938-1997), singer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and Nigerian activist, according to the plaque. I lived here as a student in 1958′′.

Mariah Carey Set To Launch Christmas Special on Apple TV+

The singer will perform the first and only performance of their new track, ‘Fall In Love At Christmas,’ with Khalid and Kirk Franklin on the festive small-screen event.

The show follows Mariah Carey‘s Magical Christmas Special, Carey’s first collaboration with the streaming platform, which debuted in 2020. Carey was joined by guest performers Ariana Grande, Jennifer Hudson, and Snoop Dogg at the event, which was narrated by Tiffany Haddish.

The Magic Continues, directed by music video director Joseph Kahn, will feature Carey as an executive producer. A release date has not yet been set.

On November 5, ‘Fall In Love At Christmas’ will be released. Kirk Franklin, a gospel vocalist and choir conductor from the United States, is also featured on the joint track.
