After the emergence of General Muhammadu Buhari as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the party’s next hurdle is the selection of his running mate. According to the regulations of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the deadline for the submission of the names of vice presidential running mates will expire at midnight yesterday. Analysts said this yesterday that with religion and ethnicity becoming major issues in the last few years, the APC would have to play its card carefully if it is serious about winning the election. Even in Lagos, once thought to be the country’s capital of liberal politics, APC was forced to field a Christian candidate this time in response to the present realities. Is the emergence of a Muslim front-runner a missed opportunity? LEADERSHIP Friday checks revealed that the only way to defeat the ruling party is for the APC to win the north as a block and also win the south west as a block. The party must substantially block President Jonathan out of the north and south west. This is because Jonathan is most likely to get block votes from the south east, and in spite of the incursion of the APC into the south-south, when it comes to the presidential election in 2015, he is likely to sweep the region. APC’s greatest challenge will, therefore, be finding the right mix of ticket that will achieve this. Out of an estimated 70 million registered voters on the roll of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the north (as a block) and the south west have a combined figure of 51 million registered voters. Analysts argued, however, that to deliver the two zones as a block and shift the battleground elsewhere, the APC candidate and his running mate must get votes from the different religious and ethnic groups that make up the two zones.

Rochas Okorocha Picks Imo APC Governorship Ticket Hours After Losing Presidential Ticket

Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha has picked APC’s governorship ticket few hours after losing his bid for the All Progressives Congress’ presidential ticket in Lagos. His son-in-law and Commissioner for Lands and Urban Planning, Chief Uche Nwosu, who was said to have been adopted as the governorship candidate, announced his withdrawal from the race after Okorocha lost the presidential bid. The Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Mr. John Alamba said: ”A few days ago, we gathered here to elect Chief Nwosu as the APC governorship candidate, but I was in Lagos when I learnt that the candidate had resigned on personal grounds. We are gathered here today to ratify Governor Okorocha as the party’s governorship candidate”. Nwosu said “party’s interest supersedes personal ambition”, and enjoined members to give same support and solidarity to Okorocha.

Bill Cosby's Star on Hollywood Blvd!

Bill Cosby's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame has been defaced with the word 'rapist' after  allegations of sexual assault.

The incident is coming after 20 women, including former super model Janice Dickinson, stepped forward to accuse the comedian of unwanted advances, including drugging and then raping them.

The president’s impeachment notice

A Reps member, Hon. Oyetunde Ojo has expressed reservation over the move to impeach President Goodluck Jonathan, saying the members of the National Assembly signed the president’s impeachment notice out of provocation and anger. Ojo who is seeking re-election as the member representing Ekiti central constituency II on the platform of APC said his colleagues hurriedly signed the impeachment notice to register their displeasure at the security agents’ harassment on the Speaker and others at the National Assembly’s gate.

In his words: “The impeachment notice was signed by members, we will look into it, but to the best of my knowledge, I do not think there is a serious level of impeachment of the president now.” Giving a clear picture of the impeachment saga, he said: "To be honest with you, although we were recalled to the house that day because of the emergency situation in the North-East, we have only sat once since the recess, the impeachment notice was signed in anger by us. You remember that we were tear-gassed that day, both members of the two houses. The lawmaker, in a chat with journalists in Aramoko-Ekiti, headquarters of Ekiti West LGA of Ekiti State, said the issue had gone beyond the House and had to do with the survival of our democracy. On his selection as the sole candidate in next year’s election, he said, “I will thank my party people, both at the state level and federal constituency. I also thank my people in the consistency who are even not in any political party. Emerging as an unopposed candidate is a thing of joy and it shows that the people have confidence in me. The mandate belongs to the people and they have unanimously chose me to represent them again. "I do not make promises, my people know me very well: what I do is to listen to them on what they want and ensure that I provide these. This gesture will make us to work harder to further please our people and bring more dividends of democracy to them and also empower our constituencies.” He added, “As state governor, Dr. Fayemi has performed very well. If that was the true will of the people well, we accept it. We have learnt from our mistakes and are ready to do better in future elections.”
