Members of the original cast will reunite for a television special later this month to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella.

via NYDN:

The original film, which hasn’t aired on broadcast television in more than two decades, will follow the special.

According to the network, the one-hour program “dives into the film’s positive impact on representation in Hollywood” and features exclusive interviews, as well as behind-the-scenes moments with late pop music icon Whitney Houston — who portrayed the Fairy Godmother.

“We’re delighted that the 25th anniversary of this landmark incarnation of ‘Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella’ is being celebrated on its original network,” Imogen Lloyd Webber of Concord Theatricals, on behalf of The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization, said in Thursday’s announcement. “Rodgers & Hammerstein’s unforgettable score is truly timeless — still enchanting listeners 80 years after their partnership began and 65 years since their ‘Cinderella’ first charmed the largest audience in television history.”

Set to air during Disney’s World Princess Week, the one-hour special will also feature Billy Porter, Jade Jones and Todrick Hall offering insight on how the colorblind-casted Robert Iscove-helmed film affected their lives.

The Emmy, Grammy and two-time Tony Award-winning Porter portrayed gender-neutral fairy godmother, Fabulous Godmother, in Amazon Prime’s recent reimagining of “Cinderella.” Hall, the “Celebrity Big Brother” castoff, is a “Cinderella” superfan who has produced several modern adaptations of the story on YouTube. Jones plays Belle in the off-Broadway tour of “Beauty and the Beast.”

When it premiered Nov. 2, 1997, the musical film became a cultural touchstone for championing diversity with the Atlantic Records superstar cast as the first Black princess in Disney history. More than 60 million viewers tuned into the broadcast of the live-action fairy tale adaptation, which garnered critical acclaim and seven Emmy nominations the next year.

After taking its time to show up on streaming services, the Debra Martin Chase-produced tour-de-force finally debuted on Disney+ in February 2021 after a new wave of fan engagement.

Our Little Mermaid is diving into a major slay for the cover of @variety!Chi Chi Gtbank #Khalid Deji Hermes Phyna #SuperFreakyGirl Bowen #Tems #WhatsApp Kaduna The PDP #NYSC What God Africans #SheggzOlu𓃵 Yusuf Eminem Enugu

Growing childhood, Halle Bailey had an obsession with "The Little Mermaid." She often watched the 1989 Disney animated classic on her family's VHS tape and pretended to be Ariel whenever she went swimming.
Bailey explains, "Her feeling of yearning, her search for herself, was something that I could relate with.
She was determined to get where she was going and wasn't going to let anyone stop her.

Bailey will now be responsible for bringing Ariel's journey for independence and true love to life on screen for a new generation of moviegoers at the age of 22.
Bailey, who is best known as part of the Grammy-nominated combo Chloe x Halle, got the lead role in the live-action version of the legendary movie four years ago.

Our Little Mermaid is diving into a major slay for the cover of @variety! #HalleBailey looks amazing. 💚

Bailey is aware of the significance of breaking down barriers by donning Ariel's fins because prior to her casting, only one other Black performer has been named a Disney princess (Anika Noni Rose as the voice of Tiana in "The Princess and the Frog").

“I want the little girl in me and the little girls just like me who are watching to know that they’re special, and that they should be a princess in every single way,” Bailey says. “There’s no reason that they shouldn’t be. That reassurance was something that I needed.”

Most fans were thrilled at the news that Bailey would play Ariel, but the trolls were just as vocal, decrying the prospect of a Black mermaid princess with the hashtag #NotMyAriel. The criticism stung. Chloe Bailey, the actor’s sister, says their tight-knit family banded together against the backlash. “It’s important,” Chloe says, “to have a strong support system around you. It’s hard to carry the weight of the world on your own.”

Bailey also got important perspective from her grandparents, who shared memories of the racism and discrimination that they had endured in their lifetimes.

“It was an inspiring and beautiful thing to hear their words of encouragement, telling me, ‘You don’t understand what this is doing for us, for our community, for all the little Black and brown girls who are going to see themselves in you,’” Bailey recalls.

And she started to think about how her y

Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party's nominee for president in 2023, made his first appearance at the ongoing convention at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG Camp on Friday night.

The Redemption City, originally Redemption Camp, in Mowe, Ogun State is the site of the 70th Convention, which got underway earlier this week.

In a social media video that is currently circulating, attendees of the event known as "Perfect Jubilee" cheered enthusiastically when Obi was introduced at the church.

The Dunamis International Gospel Center in Abuja gave him the customary standing ovation just two weeks prior.

Peter Obi’s recent visits to places of worship have been attracting criticisms, as his opponents see his move as a gimmick for political endorsements.

Ryan Giggs's ex-girlfriend sent him their sex videos weeks after accusing him of 'blackmailing' her, court hears

#jaiyeorie

According to testimony given in court, Ryan Giggs' ex-girlfriend Kate Greville delivered him their explicit videos weeks after accusing him of "blackmailing" her.

Giggs is accused of tossing Ms. Greville out of a hotel room while she was naked in an incident that happened in Dubai in 2017. This incident was previously described to the jury in the former Manchester United player's domestic abuse trial.

The 38-year-old Ms. Greville revealed how the Wales manager began their relationship by "lovebombing" her.
She claimed that he represented her "hero in shining armor," saving her from an unpleasant marriage.

But as time went on, Ms. Greville told Giggs's trial, he became 'two different people', and by their final months together he was 'pretty much relentlessly awful'.

Jurors had also been told how a friend of Ms Greville had noticed bruises on her arms following the alleged assault, which at the time she had dismissed as 'sex bruises'. She later told the police the marks were the result of an assault, which Giggs denies.

But Chris Daw QC, representing Giggs, asked about a message from Ms Greville sent three weeks after the alleged incident in the Middle East.

The message read: 'Good morning, babeeee. OMG this is amazing. Our sex is out of this world.'

It was followed by messages from Ms. Greville asking to meet him later that day, adding 'it's a long story' but that one of her work colleagues had a problem with her ex-boyfriend who had hacked into her social media and police had been called.

Mr. Daw asked why was she asking Giggs about the harassment of a woman, if he was 'such a terrible abuser of women', as she claimed.

Ms. Greville replied: 'Because at that point, it had not got to the point it had, not got the to extremities of what we discussed yesterday. It was gradual, it was subtle at that point it was not as bad as it was in 2019.'

By October 2017, Ms. Greville had agreed to come back from the Middle East to live in Manchester and work for the hospitality company owned by Giggs and his former team-mate Gary Neville.

She had a 'six-figure' salary from the firm and rented an apartment in central Manchester, returning to the UK in January 2018.

Mr Daw suggested previously the couple had a long-distance relationship but now the dynamic had changed.

Ms Greville has told the court she returned to the UK thinking she would be in a relationship with Giggs, but he instead became more distant.

Mr Daw said in January 2018, Giggs had to be interviewed for the job of football manager of the Wales national team and he therefore had a lot of work to do to prepare.

Ms Greville said: 'The work situation was not the reason for him not paying me much attention. There was obviously other things going on in his life as well.'

The court heard the couple had reconciled in May 2019, but by then Giggs had deleted their sex videos.

He then messaged Ms Greville: 'Do you still have our naughty videos?'
To which she replied she had 'most of them', before Giggs asked her to resend them to him, the court heard.

Mr Daw said to Ms Greville: 'This is just six weeks after you say he was threatening to blackmail you with sex tapes?'

Ms Greville agreed and confirmed she had sent him 'a number of such videos'.

Asked why she had sent them, she told the court: 'Because we were back in a relationship.'

And on whether she had concerns that similar issues may arise between the couple in the future, Ms Greviile said: 'I thought he had changed and he was in a different place. This was the same cycle of things. He promised he would change.'

Mr Daw QC also asked why she had not told her friend and business partner Elsa Roodt about the alleged assault in Dubai when asked.

Ms Greville, sat behind a curtain shielded from Giggs and the public gallery, said: 'I was embarrassed and I didn't want to admit it.'

Mr Daw said: 'It was a bruise caused by rough sex that the two of you enjoyed a lot.'

Ms. Greville replied: 'That bruise was not caused by rough sex.'
The court also heard how a few days after the alleged Dubai incident Ms. Greville messaged a photograph of herself to Giggs.

The message read: 'Tan is coming along nicely. My sex bruise is coming along nicely too!!'

Mr. Daw added: 'The truth of it is you did from time to time get bruises from sex.' Ms. Greville said: 'Not that I recall.'

Confirming that she had not reported the alleged assault to police in Dubai, she said: 'No, I didn't admit to the assault because I was embarrassed but I told Elsa we had argued.

'I was later to work, visibly shaken and very upset which was evident that day. I tried to play down the bruising on my arm.'

Giggs is in on trial accused of controlling and coercive behaviour against his ex-girlfriend between August 2017 and November 2020.

He is also charged with assaulting Ms Greville and her sister Emma. He denies all charges against him and is on trial at Manchester Crown Court.

Femi Kuti debunks the allegation that he described Peter Obi supporters as Zombies. Chi Chi Gtbank #Khalid Deji Hermes Phyna #SuperFreakyGirl Bowen #Tems #WhatsApp Kaduna The PDP #NYSC What God Africans #SheggzOlu𓃵 Yusuf Eminem Enugu

“I only said I was too angry to be obedient at my age” - Femi Kuti debunks the allegation that he described Peter Obi supporters as Zombies.

Femi Kuti, has criticized People's Gazette for using his comments from a performance at Fela's Shrine on Thursday out of context.

The news outlet stated on Thursday, August 11, that the renowned musician and social activist referred to Peter Obi's supporters, also referred to as "Obidients," as "Zombies," in an article.

Femi Anikulapo-Kuti reportedly said this, according to the news source;

You know what obedience means? Stand up, sit down, sit there — zombie,” Mr Kuti said during a performance at the Shrine Thursday night in Lagos, wondering why Mr Obi’s popularity has grown rapidly in recent months.

“How can you be Obidient in this chaos? I am not Obidient. Tell me, at 60, why am I Obidient? You said I should be Obidient, sit down, be peaceful,” he said. “Are you all okay in this country?

Reacting to the article via his Twitter platform, Femi Kuti revealed that he never made any snide remark about Peter Obi or his Obidient followers.

He went on to question the integrity of the news platform, calling them ‘liars’ for taking his statement out of context.

He wrote, “You are such liars.

His statement on Twitter reads further;

Of what benefit is it to the people when you take my words out of context like this?
I said I’m too angry at my age to be obedient.

The concluding part of his post reads;

Expressing I do not like the ‘term’
But if Peter Obi wins and actually changes the country better for all of us.”

Serena Williams Bids Tearful Farewell After Canadian Open Defeat

#jaiyeorie

The 40-year-old tennis champion played her first match in Toronto after announcing that she would stop playing competitive tennis after the upcoming U.S. Open.

Williams' final tournament in Canada ended in the second round of the Canadian Open, where she was defeated by 2020 Olympic gold medallist and world No. 12 Belinda Bencic in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

According to a footage published by the Tennis Channel, Williams earned a standing ovation from the spectators at Center Court at Sobeys Stadium both before and after the match.
In a post-match interview on Wednesday, she praised Bencic's performance and told Tennis Channel that it had been "a really eventful 24 hours."  attributing to a Vogue interview in which she spoke out about her retirement plans.

“It’s just been so memorable,” Williams told the outlet. “As I said in my article, I’m terrible at goodbyes, but… goodbye, Toronto!”

“I’ve always had some amazing times here both on and off the court, I’ll be coming back just as a visitor to this city,” Williams said, of leaving the Toronto-based tournament as a competitor for the final time. “Otherwise, It’s been remarkable, I’ve had some amazing matches here, some cool wins, a crazy match against [Bencic] a few years ago, that was pretty intense.”

Williams offered the crowd at Center Court a thank-you “from the bottom of my heart” before she exited the court. “It’s been a joy playing in front of you guys all these years,” she said via the Tennis Channel. “Thank you.”

Before Wednesday’s loss, Williams just earned her first singles win in more than a year on Monday when she defeated Spain’s Nuria Párrizas Díaz in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.

Since Williams was eliminated by Bencic in Toronto, the 23-time Grand Slam winner will next play at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati before she travels to New York City for one last US Open.

Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, has cautioned Ukrainian officials to refrain from discussing the military assault against Russia, stating that it was "certainly not the time for vanity and loud declarations."

Zelensky's comments follow a lengthy speech by a top Ukrainian commander outlining strategies for taking back the city of Kherson from Russian forces by the end of the year.

Major General Dmytro Marchenko discussed Ukrainian operations to destroy Russian forces' use of bridges across the Dnipro River to resupply their units in Kherson in an interview.

"I want to convey to the people of Kherson ... it will not be as long as everyone expects. It will be fast," Marchenko said.

Zelensky did not mention Marchenko by name in his video address but Ukrainian defence officials said that investigations into "a high-ranking military officer" were underway

In a video message on Thursday night, August 11, Zelensky warned military commanders and state officials against revealing attack or defence plans.

"The less concrete details you give about our defense plans, the better it will be for the implementation of those defense plans," Zelensky said

"You should feel your responsibility for every word you say about what our state prepares for in defense or counteroffensives."

"The general rule is simple: war is definitely not the time for vanity and loud statements."

Russell, who died July 31 at the age of 88, becomes the first player to have his number permanently retired across the NBA. Players who currently wear the No. 6, most notably LeBron James, may continue doing so, though the number will not be issued again to any player.

“Bill Russell’s unparalleled success on the court and pioneering civil rights activism deserve to be honored in a unique and historic way,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a press release. “Permanently retiring his No. 6 across every NBA team ensures that Bill’s transcendent career will always be recognized.”

NBPA Executive Director Tamika Tremaglio added, “This is a momentous honor reserved for one of the greatest champions to ever play the game. Bill’s actions on and off the court throughout the course of his life helped to shape generations of players for the better and for that, we are forever grateful. We are proud to continue the celebration of his life and legacy alongside the league.”

Widely considered one of the greatest players in NBA history, Russell won 11 championships in his 13 seasons with the Celtics.

A five-time NBA MVP and 12-time All-Star, Russell cemented his status as one of the most dominant centers of all time, averaging 15.1 points and 22.5 rebounds rebounds per game over the course of his career. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1975.

Tiffany Haddish reveals she once turned down $10m offer for an endorsement post @tiffanyhaddish Phyna Rachel Deji #Khalid Chi Chi Hermes Adekunle #SuperFreakyGirl Kuda Dotun She's 41 Innoson #SheggzOlu𓃵 #BringBackBeauty Delta State Eminem #emilokan Datti 2face

According to Tiffany Haddish, she previously declined a check for several million dollars for an endorsement agreement because it didn't fit with her principles.

The comedian and actor is the newest face on the cover of Cosmopolitan's travel issue.
Haddish acknowledged in the cover article that she turned down a $10 million payout because it made her "feel like sh*t."

“I’ve turned down $10 million just to do a post because it didn’t represent my brand,” she told the outlet. “I turned down $10 million because my soul is worth more than that to me. My spirit, my integrity, how I want to be able to look at myself in the mirror every day. I’d rather be flat broke than get money to do something that makes me feel like sh*t.”

Haddish, 42, explained that her mindset has even extended to her acting career. Now, she accepts roles that “resonate with her soul” and lets her exercise her producing skills.

“At first with acting roles, I used to just be like, what seems like fun?” she said. “Now it’s, what seems like fun and what resonates with my soul?”

She went on, “Then I ask, who else is working on it? Will it be my friends? What I’ve noticed lately, though, is that casting has been coming to me first. So I’ve learned how to fight better too.”

“It’s a battle getting the people that you want, because everybody still looks at you as talent, when they fail to realise I’ve produced things, got nominated for awards, won trophies. I kind of know what I’m doing,” the Girls Trip star added. “Give me an opportunity to make you richer, sir. I might not know how to keep a man, but I know how to make some money.”

Multi-hyphenate Tiffany Haddish is Cosmopolitan’s 2022 Travel Issue cover star. For the cover story, Tiffany opens up about setting boundaries, the privilege of being able to travel, queendom-building and more.

On the cover, Tiffany looks incredible in an orange crochet cover-up by Cult Gaia, which she paired with silver hoop earrings from  Gold & Honey and gold rings from Jennifer Fisher. Like always, she sports her platinum blonde buzzcut complemented by a two-toned smokey eye look and neutral lips.

On setting boundaries between work and self-care

I love and hate telling people no. I love it because it’s for me—I have to take care of Tiffany. I hate it because nine times out of ten, whoever’s asking me is somebody I probably really like and care about. If a friend wants me to do a show or something like that, I have to be honest and say, ‘I can’t do it. I gotta get up early in the morning and the reason I gotta get up so early is because I need to go for a walk. So you just got to be selfish in a way, and I hate that feeling of being selfish, but I love the results.

On staying true to herself in an industry that tends to try to polish celebrities as they ascend

They be trying to polish me. They be trying their best. I ain’t perfect. There is no way on God’s earth that I’m not going to make mistakes, that I’m not going to say something out of pocket, that I’m not going to be out of order. But I’m willing to learn and I’m willing to evolve, and how I feel today might be different than how I feel tomorrow. But if you don’t make mistakes, you’ll never grow. You’ll never be successful. Every successful person I know that’s winning has failed multiple times.

On Black women being often praised for being “resilient” and “strong”

This is the part I hate, and I don’t know if my phone has been listening to me or what, but I’ve been seeing a lot of posts about it on social media. I am not just a strong, Black woman. I am a woman. I need to be nurtured. I need to be protected. I need to be soft.

Say it with me now: Tiffany Haddish needs a vacation 🌴 Between writing multiple (yes, multiple!!) books, playing a role in literally every major movie of the summer, filming an Apple TV+ series, and scheming about her next projects, our Travel Issue cover star finds a little peace. And a hot stranger.
