Muslim woman was awarded $85000 after her hijab was forcefully removed by policeman

Kirsty Powell, an African American Muslim filed a lawsuit, in 2016 and it prompted the Long Beach Police Department to reverse its policy barring inmates from wearing religious head coverings.

The case started in May 2015 when Powell and her husband were stopped by two officers because he was driving a lowrider vehicle on Long Beach Boulevard, Rifahie said.

She provided them with her identification information. When officers ran her name through their database, they discovered she had three misdemeanor warrants for petty theft, vehicle theft and resisting arrest, police said.

Powell was not aware that a warrant had been issued for a 2002 petty theft offense, her attorney said. The other warrants were issued after Powell’s sister had falsely used her name, according to the federal lawsuit.

As officers prepared to arrest Powell, her husband requested that a female officer be called to the scene since physical contact must be done by a woman, the lawsuit contends.

The officers refused and handcuffed Powell, according to the suit. She was then told she would have to remove her hijab.

Powell told the officers “that she wears a hijab in accordance with her religious practice and that it is her legal right to wear it,” the lawsuit said.

She was driven to the Long Beach police station, where she was booked and stripped of her hijab in front of other male officers and inmates, according to the lawsuit.

Powell was detained for 24 hours without her hijab. Once she was allowed to leave, she was given a property bag containing it.

“She was held in the jail overnight, forced to sit in a cell feeling distraught, vulnerable and naked without her headscarf to everyone that passed,” the lawsuit said. “She cried throughout the ordeal and experienced humiliation when both her religious beliefs and personal integrity were violated. She felt that the male officers and male inmates had seen parts of her body that they should not have seen, according to her religious beliefs.”

Shortly after her release, Powell reached out to CAIR, the Muslim civil rights organization, to go over her options.

3 Yahoo-Boys Defraud Lagos Speaker the Sum of N9.2million Via Facebook

Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr. Mudashiru Obasa

Men of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), of the Lagos State Police Command, Panti-Yaba have arrested three men, accused of cyber crime and theft of N9.2million, property of Lagos State House Speaker.

According to DailyTrust, the men identified as Frank Nwokobia, 27, Ezeoke Kanayochukwu, 25, and Godwin Essien, 28 have been sent to Ikoyi Prison by a Federal High Court in Lagos, after they were docked today.

The police said the three men conspired to hack the Facebook account of the Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, and also gained access to his account at Guaranty Trust Bank, where they stole his N9, 188,100.

The men, arrested in Delta state, were all arraigned before Justice (Professor) Chuka Obiozor, on five count charge of conspiracy, impersonation, and theft.

The Police prosecutor Barrister Williams Olu Ologun informed the court that the three accused were arrested in Delta State, after Obasa, petitioned the police that his Facebook account had been hacked into and that the sum of N9.188,100 million had been withdrawn from his account by unidentified individuals.

He also stated that upon the arrest of the accused , they voluntarily made statement admitting being into cyber crime business. The offences alleged to have been committed by the accused persons are contrary to sections 27(1)(b) and 22(2)(b)(ii) of Cybercrimes Prohibition and Prevention Act, 2015. The three accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Upon their pleas of not-guilty, their lawyer, Mr. Ali Abba,urged the court to admit them to bail in liberal terms,as they have credible sureties, and that they will always attend court for their trial.

Justice Chuka Obiozor, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N5 million with one surety each. The surety must be recommended by their lawyer,who must be resident of Lagos State, with landed property and three year tax payment.

The judge also stated that the property title documents and tax payment must be verified by the court’s Deputy Chief Registrar (DCR).

Oluwatosin Kazeem, accused of obtaining more than 125,000 stolen taxpayer identities from across the United States has been convicted in a federal court in Oregon.

He was found guilty on 19 counts of mail and wire fraud, aggravated identity theft and conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, various reports by Oregonlive.com and koin.com said.

A jury in Medford returned the verdicts Friday against Emmanuel Oluwatosin Kazeem, 34, who lived most recently in Bowie, Maryland.

Prosecutors say Kazeem bought over 91,000 of the identities from a Vietnamese hacker who got into a database belonging to an Oregon company called CICS Employment Services.

Most of the personal information belonged to people living in Oregon and Washington and were used to file fraudulent tax returns between 2012 and 2015.

Qatar Offers Visa-free Entry to 80 Nationalities

Qatar govt announced on Wednesday a visa-free entry programme for 80 nationalities to stimulate air transport and tourism.

“The visa exemption scheme will make Qatar the most open country in the region,” tourism department official Hassan al-Ibrahim told a press conference in Doha.

Interior ministry official Mohamed Rashed al-Mazroui said the nationals of 80 countries would only need to present a valid passport for entry to the energy-rich Gulf state which is to host football’s 2022 World Cup.

The 80 countries were not named and neither was the date from which the visa-free programme will take effect, but Qatari newspapers said it would apply mainly to Western nationals.

Nationals of 33 countries will be authorised to stay for 180 days and the other 47 for up to 30 days, periods which are renewable a single time. Mazroui said the countries were selected on the basis of security and economic considerations, or for the buying-power of their nationals.

Qatar Airways chief Akbar al-Baker said his carrier, which this year plans to extend its network to 62 new destinations, would be a primary beneficiary.

Regional kingpin Saudi Arabia as well as Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt have since June 5 imposed a boycott on Qatar, accusing the emirate of fostering Islamist extremist groups and of close ties to Iran. Doha has denied the allegations.

The four Gulf nations have closed their land and sea borders to Qatar and imposed economic and air traffic restrictions. On August 3, Qatar created a new permanent residents status for certain groups of foreigners, including those who have worked for the benefit of the emirate, a first for the Gulf.

Under the new rules, children with a Qatari mother and a foreign father can benefit from the new status, along with foreign residents who have “given service to Qatar” or have “skills that can benefit the country”.

Those deemed eligible for the new status will be afforded the same access as Qataris to free public services, such as health and education.

Qatar has a population of 2.4 million people, 90 percent of whom are foreigners, including many from south Asia working in construction.

A Kenyan female politician floored her son politically. Kipng’etich Kones, the son of a late Cabinet Minister Kipkalya Kones, who ran in the Kenyan parliamentary election lost to his mother, Beatrice Kones.

Beatrice Kone beat her son and seven other contestants when she polled 22,796 votes against her son’s 2,410 votes. Kipng’etich who contested on a Chama Cha Mashinani (CCM) ticket got a lot of support from outgoing Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto, while his mother contested on a Jubilee Party ticket.

Many residents of Bomet East, the constituency of the family, said the family battle was not blessed. Others said the rivalry was a depiction of democracy and showed maturity as far as politics is concerned.

According to Kenyan news website, Daily Nation, the area overwhelmingly voted for Jubilee and it might be a reason why Kones lost to his mum. It was one of the most watched duels in the elections since it pitted members of a nuclear family and the outcome was eagerly awaited.

One of the residents of the area was quoted by a local daily saying the result should be a lesson to all young people. “You can never rise against your parent, especially your mother and expect to succeed.
