“NYSC is not just adding any value to our society or even to the lives of our children - Omotola Ekeinde

In a recent interview with New Telegraph, Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade discloses reasons why President Muhammadu Buhari should scrap National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

In her reasons, she said, “I have looked at the programme thoroughly and exactly what it’s supposed to have achieved over the years. Believe me, there is no credible or tangible result. It’s a total waste of time and resources and I think all the time and resources should be channeled into something more resourceful.”

“NYSC is not just adding any value to our society or even to the lives of our children. I am of the opinion that it should be scrapped,” she added.

Nevertheless, Omotola suggested the introduction of skills acquisition in place of the NYSC scheme.

“Let us make good plans for our children, instead of going to waste a whole year of their struggle, claiming they are serving their fatherland. They should be trained and equipped with skills. That way, their future is secure,” she said.

Anyadike 15-yr-old Nigerian Girl Has Become The Youngest Pilot To Fly Coss-country #pilot

Anyadike learned to fly at age 12 through the Compton-based Tomorrow’s Aeronautical Museum, which offers aviation lessons in an after-school program for disadvantaged youths,  told the Times.

“I told her it was going to be a daunting task, but she just said, ‘Put it on. I got big shoulders,'” Petgrave said.

Along for the historic ride were an adult safety pilot and 87-year-old Levi Thornhill, one of the Tuskeegee Airmen during World War II.

“They left such a great legacy,” Anyadike said of the U.S. Army Air Corps’ all-black combat unit. “I had big shoes to fill. … All they wanted to do was to be patriots for this country. They were told no, that they were stupid, that they didn’t have cognitive development to fly planes. They didn’t listen. They just did what they wanted to do.”
About 50 Tuskeegee Airmen autographed the young pilot’s plane during her journey, the Times reported.

“I wanted to inspire other kids to really believe in themselves,” Anyadike said.

Lagos Gov. Ambode Approves Release Of N11bn To Offset Pension Arrears

Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State has approved the release of N11 billion to offset all pension liabilities in the state accrued since 2010.
The state’s Head of Service, Mrs Shade Jaji, in Lagos on Wednesday said that the move was to bring succour to all retirees in the state’s public service.

She added
"The state government has developed a comprehensive payment plan to resolve all outstanding pension issues in the immediate (short), medium and long terms.
"The short and immediate term plan is for pension payments to MDAs and Parastatals, including local governments and SUBEB, which will be made monthly, commencing from August 2015,’’
Jaji said.

NYSC might beome voluntary

Director-General of NYSC, Brig.-Gen. Johnson Olawumi, also told the President that there are plans to make the scheme voluntary so as to reduce the corps population and sustain it.

The president affirmed his confidence and trust in the scheme, saying that the objective for which the scheme was established in 1973 was still very relevant for national development.

He said, “I firmly believe in NYSC and I think it should remain a national programme to promote integration.

“Whenever I go home to Daura, I look out for corps members from Lagos, Aba and other parts of the country.

“I am always thrilled to learn that except for the NYSC, some of them have never left their states of origin to visit other cities in the country.”

Ms. Jimeta had informed the president that the increasing number of NYSC members was a challenge to the scheme due to dwindling revenue from the national budget to cater for their needs.

She also told the president that the annual enrollment of corps participants had increased from 2,364 at inception in 1974 to 229,016 in 2014.

She added that “given the increasing number of tertiary institutions, our projection is that the number of participants may rise to 300,000 by year 2020″

Dilemmas With Choosing The Right Daycare -@therealdakore #motherhood #mummy #daycare

On today’s post I want to share some of the challenges I experienced while looking for a good educational Daycare centre for my babies.
I’m a big believer in early education for children, as my first born, Ayomide started going to daycare as early as 8months! I know some of you might think it was too early but it was deliberate on my part after a lot of research.
I first noticed she had a tendency to be shy around her fellow toddlers yet she was totally at ease with adults probably because she didn’t have any consistent interaction with them. In hindsight it shows that she had become comfortable only in adult company which is not bad, but since it is her peers she will eventually have to interact with we decided day care that it was the best thing to do for her. And guess what? It totally transformed her and now she’s the first one to say hello. She is not that shy awkward kid anymore and it’s been amazing to watch.
In order to back up my long narrative, studies have shown that the period from newborn to 5 years is a critical time in a child’s ultimate development into adulthood. They are akin to sponges soaking up everything they are exposed to and it is truly up to us Mums and Dads alike to give them proper exposure to well supervised, highly skilled and learned play. This can be done at daycare or playgroups.
This is in addition to a good home environment where the mother and father play an active role in their child’s development.
Armed with this new knowledge and experience, yet another added task in the joys and challenges of motherhood, is finding the right daycare facility or playgroup or crèche or a hybrid of all for your precious little ones. Believe me it has nothing to do with being abroad or here in Nigeria. The real issue is which one out of so many? In recent times in Nigeria especially, there’s a daycare on almost every street corner – due to increased demand borne out of both parents working away from the household. Typical concerns are: Do they have the perfect balance of reasonable cost, love and care, educational value, hygiene and cleanliness, ratio of children to adults, location, proximity for easy pickup, etc?
With Dasola, our younger daughter, things were not so easy the second time around in this regard. Generally I trust my gut instincts about things and most times I’m spot on. But I found that with regards to choosing schools, it made my task of finding the right one harder, not only because of the aforementioned criteria but it just had to feel right in my spirit as well.with baby mumsworld
I looked at 8 different schools before I settled on where she goes now. Phew! In addition I had to do this starting from when she was 6 months old so I would go and check out each one in between filming takes and breaks, which are fewer and further between these days. This put me under a lot of strain and stress because this is my precious little cargo we’re talking about and it’s not easy to find people or institutions that share that same vision.
There were two schools I went to and they were really nice and new, but in the first one, there were too few students in class, the second one I really liked but there were too many kids crammed into a small space which made me uncomfortable, especially when you think of the fact that we’re now in an era of easily spread diseases, germs and the like.
Another school I really liked, was very nice, but would have been a logistical nightmare because it was too far away. I believe you get the picture now.
Now coming to the end of my long story, when I walked into Dasola’s current playgroup it just felt right. It was the best balance of all my criteria and it felt like a family and not just another potential pay-check for them. The proprietor is really warm, lives on the premises, and wasn’t ridiculously expensive. I’ve seen a lot of growth in my daughter and she loves it there, thank God! Or could it be that I was just fed up at this point? I’d like to believe the former rather than the latter!
So please share your own thoughts, experiences and challenges in the comment section, let me know if there are any topics you would want to see shared on this blog. And for more information on pregnancy, baby and toddler visit http://www.mumsworldafrica.com

Dakore

'I Am A Girl On Fire' - Sahara TV Host, Toyosi Phillips @ToyosiPhillips

Could you please tell us about your background and journey into the media world?
I was born in Lagos, Nigeria and schooled and lived there for the first 21 years of my life. It was 21 years of winning dance competitions at parties and class awards shows; 21 years of singing, acting and getting into trouble with teachers; and 21 years of making mistakes, learning and trying to understand/tame myself.
I got my first degree in Economics at Bowen University and second in Economic Development and Policy Analysis at University of Nottingham, UK. I got a job a little while later and then realized I was doing the wrong thing, so I quit my job and moved to New York city where I obtained a Diploma in Broadcast Journalism at the New York Film Academy. That’s how the new chapter of my life started.
If you were not a media personality, what would you have been?
A singer. I’d probably have gone through the same motions and then quit my  job for singing.
Where would you rather be? New York or Nigeria? And why?
I’d rather be in New York, which is where I am now. There's still so much to learn here!!

What are the challenges you face as a Nigerian media personality living in the United States? And what are the advantages?
Challenges of being a Nigerian personality living in the United States…  I really can’t think of any right now. I’m still working on my craft, trying to own my space and be secure in my skills so I don’t see anything as a challenge, I see everything as a learning processes.
Advantages of being here: I’d say being a Nigerian is actually an advantage. I get to be a part of the potpourri of people and I love it. It gives me a sense of satisfaction.
