Platnumz becomes the first East African artist to sign to Universal Music Group

Tanzania's Diamond Platnumz becomes a Universal Music Group (UMG) artist, having signed a recording deal with UMG South Africa.
Platnumz becomes the first East African artist to sign to the music group.

He has also recorded new music with International act Ne-yo, and is currently promoting this.

 Diamond said.

“When they announced he would be performing at the MTV Africa Music Awards, I was excited. After we met we discussed the possibility of doing a collaboration and he was ready to it. I chose Ne-Yo to record this song with because he fits my style of music. I am so happy because I grew up listening to Ne-Yo songs and most of my style is inspired by him so it’s a dream come true for a kid who grew up in a slum area in Tanzania.

“He’s a star, he is talented and full of energy and creatively he’s on par with any international artist I’ve worked with,” Sipho Dlamini, Universal Music’s Managing Director South Africa & Sub-Saharan Africa says.

Catherine Howarth 35, Beats Million-to-one Odds By Giving Birth To Two White Children With Blue Eyes

Catherine Howarth 35, who is married to a white man, Richard Howarth becomes the only black woman to consecutively give birth to two white children with blue eyes.

According to Dailymail, Catherine’s first child, Jonah, three-years-old, was a blue-eyed, white baby boy her second child, Sophia who is also as white as her brother.
Catherine believes she is the only black mother in the world to have given birth to two white, blue-eyed children, explained that she didn’t believe she would have a second white child.

She said,

When Jonah was born, a genetic specialist said he was a one-in-a-million baby. He said it was extraordinary with my African background that I’d had a child with blue eyes and pale skin. He calculated the possibility of it happening again was less than one in a million.
So when Sophia was born with white skin and blue eyes I was more than taken back with shock. It seems the odds of it happening twice are millions-to-one. No-one has heard of a black mum having two white babies one after the other.
When I had Jonah, he was so white both Richard and I thought the midwife had given us the wrong child. But if anything, having Sophia has been even more of a shock because we were sure it couldn’t happen twice. I was stunned when I saw her blue eyes and light skin.
Catherine’s husband explained that the skin of their children doesn’t matter to them. They were just happy to have healthy and happy kids.
Colleen Lynch, a Molecular Geneticist said it was likely there is a white gene somewhere in Catherine’s ancestry and due to an evolutionary throwback – known as atavism – this trait had suddenly reappeared.

@Majeayida hires U.K and Nigerian lawyers to sue Toke Makinwa @tokstarr over ‘fabricated’ book

Following the release of a must- tell-all memoir, On Becoming, chronicling her relationship with Maje Ayida.

OAP Toke Makinwa, has been asked to stop the sales of the book and all forms of promotional activities, via a “letter of demand," from Ayida's lawyers.
TheCable Lifestyle has learned that Maje Ayida has hired law firms in both the United Kingdom and Nigeria to handle the case.
They are Carter-Ruck, a leading defamation law firm in the UK to top figures like Simon Cowell, Elton John and Chelsea FC while Kemi Pinheiro (SAN) of Pineiro LP is heading the legal front in Nigeria.

In the book, Makinwa accused Ayida of giving her STDs, being a serial cheat and committing adultery. The legal documents describe the book as nothing but “exaggerated fabrication”. The book was said to contain “defamatory words”. .

According to the letter of demand sent to Makinwa, Ayida was said to have “requested legal separation” from her “within 6 months” of their marriage in January 2014 — “when it became clear that the marriage was breaking down”. .

Makinwa was alleged to have signed a legal separation agreement in July 2014,. The letter said it was well documented that Makinwa and Ayida had agreed to separate by July 2014, which the book failed to record. .

The book which was published November 27, 2016, by Kachifo Limited, was said to contain “defamatory words”.

THE BONE OF CONTENTION
According to the letter of demand sent to Makinwa, her estranged husband was said to have “requested legal separation” from her “within 6 months” of their marriage in January 2014 — “when it became clear that the marriage was breaking down”.
Makinwa was alleged to have signed a legal separation agreement in July 2014, TheCable Lifestyle was informed.
The letter said it was well documented that Makinwa and Ayida had agreed to separate by July 2014, which the book failed to record.
“The book misleadingly describes the circumstances at the time,” the letter read.
Pinheiro LP, the Nigerian law firm, said it was untrue that Maje had given her an “STI in the past or at any stage in their relationship.”
The law firm also noted that it was “highly misleading” for the book to allege that Maje “did not financially contribute adequately” to the marriage.
“The publicity sought by you has been relentless, and limitless,” said Adebowale Kamoru in the letter of demand, on behalf of Pinheiro LP.
EFFECT OF BOOK ON MAJE’S CAREER
The law firm further noted that the publication has brought “public ridicule” on Maje, noting that his reputation has been “assaulted, injured and damaged.”
“His professional integrity as one of the leading health and wellness practitioners in Nigeria, and his professional credibility built over the years through dedicated hard work have been besmirched”, the letter said.
According to the law firm, Makinwa’s representation of Ayida in the book was “not a true reflection of who he is, his character and his background.”
DEMANDS OF AYIDA
Maje Ayida, through his lawyers, has, among other things, informed Makinwa to retrieve the already-sold books and stop all forms of distribution, TheCable Lifestyle understands.
The letter mandated Makinwa to “withdraw from circulation all copies of the book and take immediate steps to call in all copies of the book already distributed and deliver up same at the place to be agreed upon by our client for destruction.”
It further said a failure by the popular celebrity to “retract” the “published words” and tender a full page unreserved apology to Maje Ayida in three national dailies “will result in the commencement of legal action.”
Makinwa was also advised to “take immediate steps” to stop the distribution of the books on Amazon, iTunes and all forms of promotion on her social media accounts.
She was given seven days upon receipt of the letter to comply with the demands or they’d be forced to seek legal redress.
The warning letter was said to have been delivered to Makinwa on Monday, December 23, 2016.
Makinwa is set to hold a book reading in Ghana on Friday, February 3.
It can’t be immediately confirmed whether she received the letter of demand.
Messages sent to her by TheCable Lifestyle were unanswered.

@AliciaKeys – ”How You Look Is Your Statement, Because It’s…..”

Alicia Keys - ''How You Look Is Your Statement, Because It’s.....''
Pretty Alicia Keys is on the cover for Glamour Magazine's March 2017 edition.

In a chat with Kimberly Drew, she talks about her stand to sans makeup since May 2016 and whether she considers beauty as a revolutionary act.

Read Excerpts from her Interview below:
On what she has learnt since swearing off makeup:
”I guess I’ve come to terms that life is going to be a constant peeling back of layers, a constant unlearning of what we’ve been taught or believe to be true. I think that I’ve come to terms with the fact that that’s just going to happen for the whole duration of my life. I feel really good about being able to look myself in the face and say, “Oh, who are you now?” And that might change.”

On her iconic braids and if she considers beauty to be a revolutionary act:
”It definitely is, but I didn’t think about that then. I didn’t think wearing braids was something revolutionary or iconic; that was just how I loved wearing my hair. I recognize now that how you look is your statement, because it’s a claiming of yourself. You’re saying, “Look, world. This is me. Love me or hate me, I really don’t care.” I guess that is the revolution. I think what happens in the world, and I think it’s part human nature and part programming, is we become an emulation of what we see. We become clones of each other. And to break free from that and say, “Wait, I’m deciding to be my own individual self. And it looks nothing like what anyone else is doing.” There’s something so powerful about being my own gorgeous, beautiful, individual, unique self”

@KunleAfolayan is coverstar for Guardian Life Latest Edition @GuardianLife

Kunle

Kunle Afolayan of PhoneSwap, The CEO, The Figurine and had a chat with GuardianLife as coverstar for a recent edition..

Excerpts..

How would you describe yourself? Where were you born and where did you study?

Well I am Kunle, I am real. I am very focused. If I believe in something, I just go for it.  I am a dreamer. Once I dream, I work towards actualising it, I put in all my energy and that has always worked for me. I was born in Lagos, I spent three years of my life in Kwara state, that’s where I am from. I did the latter part of my college in Kwara and after then I came back to Lagos. After that I did my higher institution in Lagos State Polytechnic.  I only spent about six months in the UK studying digital filmmaking and since then I have been back in Lagos. I studied business administration and worked at the bank for about seven years. Then I started making films. I started as an actor in 1998 and I set up my production company in 2005, I made my first film in 2006 and that is what it has been. I do TV production, we do documentaries, commercials, film, a lot of people know me for feature films but my Golden Effect company runs on its own. I run as a brand.

 Kunle

How did you initially get into directing?  What inspired you to go towards this path?

When I was going to start, I was actually going to start as a filmaker, then I reached out to some people who worked with my father in the past and some of them just thought I was a joke. Filmmaking is something you have to learn. Yes it is an acquired skill but you can’t say, “Oh I have talent of being a film maker.”

More when you continue..
You have to learn, and with the camera you have to learn how to operate all these gears. It is a lot of processes. Going to them I was barely 20. I went to Tunde Kelani, I went to a few people. They told me, for you to be a filmmaker you have to learn it. You go to school but you look like you have a good face for camera, why don’t you start as an actor just like your father? Then he said we are working on Sunday, you can come for audition and I was picked. We did the film Saworoide in ’98. The production values were really good, it made a hit, I played a prince.  It was a very good film and it gave me a lot of mileage. I was already working in a bank when we shot that film.  After that it was difficult for me to do a lot because of my bank work.

You mentioned your father was in the film business, can you tell me a bit about your father and how he influenced you towards this path.
My father was an actor, he was one of the film pioneers in Nigeria. He crossed from travelling theatre to travelling cinema. They move around with their cameras and troop. I spent most of my days as a child travelling with the family and troop. Did I learn to make films from that? No it was impossible. Sometimes we would go on their set just to kid around, myself and some of my brothers, and they would send us home.  I learnt the business of film through the family, because from age 13, I used to travel for my dad’s films to neighbouring towns and countries in West Africa. Through that I learnt how the ticketing and cinema business runs, publicity etc, it has really helped me.

Tell us about your creative process, how did the idea for a period movie like October 1st come about?
I love culture. A lot of times, my heart skips when I remember that some of these things are going. I remember we don’t archive things in this country. I remember that in the nearest future my children won’t be speaking our language. So I said I want to do a small film set in a small location about a particular tribe. They don’t speak Yoruba, they don’t speak Igbo or Hausa, they speak a minority language. It was pretty difficult. Tunde Babalola who wrote the film gave me the synopsis for October 1st, that was not what I was looking to do, I was looking to do a small budget film, anything period of course will increase your budget. In re-enacting the period you need to spend a lot of money especially in a country where you don’t have archives. It was a bit difficult to shoot, because we had to travel to Ondo to all these places that depict what we were looking for but in the end we pulled it off.
