Oyingbo market was extremely dirty, not about N5m fine — Tinubu’s daughter

Iyaloja general of Nigeria Folashade Tinubu-Ojo on Thursday explained that the Oyingbo market in Lagos was shut down because of environmental issues.

The traders had protested after the market was closed on November 12.

At a press briefing, Mrs Tinubu-Ojo said that contrary to insinuation that she sought for payment of N5m over the issue, the market was shut down because of its deplorable state.

“The Mainland Local Government chairman Hon. Omolola Essien had earlier called me to close down the Oyingbo market because it was extremely dirty,” she said.

“Also, the ministry of environment had initially done so much earlier in the year for same reason before it was reopened. The governor of Lagos State Babajide Sanwo-Olu had also visited the market and thereafter sent a letter to that effect. The traders were then given time to do the needful.”

The Iyaloja, who is the daughter of former Lagos State governor Bola Tinubu, regretted that the market, which was constructed less than 10 years ago, was now in bad shape.

“I visited the market on Thursday last week and instructed them not to open the market the next day and that they should also move their goods out of the market, with a promise that I will be there on Friday to ensure proper sanitation.

“I was there as said, on Friday and ordered the traders to pack their stuff out of the market while it was properly cleaned on Friday and Saturday. I sent delegates to check on Tuesday if thorough sanitation had been done as instructed,” she said.

Tinubu Ojo said that the traders were given 24 hours prior notice, adding that the ministry of environment had earlier shut the market without prior notice, for months.

“We can’t continue to celebrate dirt. I stood at the gate and asked them to move their perishables before it was closed,” she said.

Tinubu-Ojo appealed to the traders to ensure proper sanitation.

She acknowledged that the local government executive was aware that some hoodlums were collecting N2,500 from traders daily.

“The touts need to be evacuated from the market to ensure orderliness, cleanliness, law and order,” she said.

US Secretary of State Blinken meets Buhari in Aso Villa

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House in Abuja on Thursday.

Blinken arrived at the Presidential Villa just before 4 pm. He was received at the forecourt by the state chief of protocol, Lawal Kazaure, who led him to the president’s office.

The US diplomat is on a three-nation tour of Africa and had first visited Kenya where he called for African-driven solutions to the continent’s crises including the spiralling war in Ethiopia — where Nigeria’s former president Olusegun Obasanjo has been leading mediation. He will also be in Senegal.

Blinken held talks with Buhari which is believed to be centred around security.

He met Vice President Yemi Osinbajo where he signed some agreements between the US and Nigeria.

Blinken’s visit comes on the heels of Nigeria’s removal from a US blacklist of nations that violate religious freedom.

Special adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on media and publicity Femi Adesina has accused former military rulers Ibrahim Babangida, Sani Abacha and Olusegun Obasanjo of sending the Nigerian Army into “comatose”.

Mr Adesina stated this in his opinion article on Friday titled “No Longer ‘An Army of Anything Goes,” adding that it took the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari to restore the lost glory of the army.

“Our army had done exploits in Burma, in Congo, at different peacekeeping operations in many parts of the world, but by 1993, it had deteriorated to become ‘an army of anything goes.’ Like disorganized Boy Scouts. Pity!” he began.

“Why should we believe that unflattering appellation? Because it came from one of its very own, a well-respected Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Salihu Ibrahim. Ibrahim had commanded the army from August 1990 to September 1993, and when he was retiring, he lamented that the once-revered institution had become ‘an army of anything goes.’

Ogun lawmakers order Ayo Adesanya’s ex-husband’s arrest

The Ogun State House of Assembly has ordered security operatives to arrest actor Goriola Hassan, the ex-husband of actress Ayo Adesanya for parading himself as the Oba-elect of Imobi.

The speaker, Olakunle Olumo on Thursday ordered that Hassan should be arrested and brought to the assembly within 14 days.

Oluomo ordered his arrest following the presentation and adoption of the report of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

The committee had in August threatened to arrest the actor and his accomplices if they fail to appear before them following his alleged claim to the stool of Imobi-Ijebu.

The chairman of the committee Bolanle Ajayi in a statement said that “Failure to honor the invitation would result in the issuance of an arrest warrant to all invitees, especially Goriola Hassan, who failed to honor an earlier invitation extended to him by the Assembly.”

Ajayi also accused the Yoruba actor of disobeying the orders of constituted authority that asked him to stop parading himself as the Olu of Imobi.

The committee affirmed that the Onitasin of Itasin remained the only king and prescribed authority in Imobi land.

Chukwuma said this during an interactive session with journalists where he disclosed that he used to have the best business relationship with the bank until the current managing director took over the leadership of the bank with ethnic bias and the relationship started going sour.

He said: “I am waiting for the time when the cumulative interest on the money GTB owes me would overwhelm it so that I will take over the bank. This is what I am waiting for. This 2021 academic year, all first-year MBA students will be required to complete a case study on EbonyLife Media as part of their curriculum.

US President Biden transfers power to VP Harris over health ”issues”

President Joe Biden on Friday wrote the United States Senate to convey his decision to temporarily transfer the powers and duties of his office to Vice President Kamala Harris as he undergoes a routine surgery which will require sedation.

In the letter addressed to Honourable Patrick Leahy, President Pro Tempore of the United States Senate, Biden said the transfer of power to Harris was in accordance with section 3 of the 25th Amendment to the United States Constitution.

He added that the letter is a written declaration that he is presently unable to discharge the powers and duties of the of the office of the President of the United States.

“Pursuant to section 3, the Vice President shall discharge those powers and duties as Acting President until I transmit to you a written declaration that I am able to resume the discharge of those powers and duties,” Biden said in the letter.

The White House had earlier revealed that Biden will transfer power briefly to Harris on Friday while he is under anesthesia for a routine colonoscopy.

The decision makes Harris the first woman to hold presidential power in U.S. history.

Number of smokers reducing globally – WHO report..

The number of tobacco users has dropped by 2 million, a report by the World Health Organisation has shown.

The report, which is the 4th WHO global tobacco trends report shows that there are 1.30 billion tobacco users globally compared to 1.32 billion in 2015.

The report showed that sixty countries are now on track to achieving the voluntary global target of a 30 per cent reduction in tobacco use between 2010 and 2025 – two years ago only 32 countries were on track.

US removes Nigeria from religious violators’ list

The United States has removed Nigeria from its list of religious violators, even as it blacklisted Russia, China and eight other countries “as Countries of Particular Concern for having engaged in or tolerated ‘systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations of religious freedom.”

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken made this known in a statement on Wednesday titled, ‘Religious Freedom Designations’.

While the US had in 2020 placed Nigeria and six other countries on its special watch list of states that had engaged in or tolerated the severe violation of religious freedom, Nigeria was missing from the list of countries designated in the 2021 list for religious violations.

Blinken, who is currently in East African nation Kenya on an official visit, is scheduled to physically visit Nigeria this week and meet with the Nigerian President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and other members of his cabinet.

The US Secretary of State, in his statement on Wednesday, said, “The United States will not waiver in its commitment to advocate for freedom of religion or belief for all and in every country. In far too many places around the world, we continue to see governments harass, arrest, threaten, jail, and kill individuals simply for seeking to live their lives in accordance with their beliefs. This Administration is committed to supporting every individual’s right to freedom of religion or belief, including by confronting and combating violators and abusers of this human right.

“Each year the Secretary of State has the responsibility to identify governments and non-state actors, who, because of their religious freedom violations, merit designation under the International Religious Freedom Act.

“I am designating Burma, the People’s Republic of China, Eritrea, Iran, the DPRK, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan as Countries of Particular Concern for having engaged in or tolerated “systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations of religious freedom.”

“I am also placing Algeria, Comoros, Cuba, and Nicaragua on a Special Watch List for governments that have engaged in or tolerated “severe violations of religious freedom.” Finally, I am designating al-Shabab, Boko Haram, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the Houthis, ISIS, ISIS-Greater Sahara, ISIS-West Africa, Jamaat Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin, and the Taliban as Entities of Particular Concern.

“The challenges to religious freedom in the world today are structural, systemic, and deeply entrenched. They exist in every country. They demand sustained global commitment from all who are unwilling to accept hatred, intolerance, and persecution as the status quo. They require the international community’s urgent attention.

“We will continue to press all governments to remedy shortcomings in their laws and practices, and to promote accountability for those responsible for abuses. The United States remains committed to working with governments, civil society organizations, and members of religious communities to advance religious freedom around the world and address the plight of individuals and communities facing abuse, harassment, and discrimination on account of what they believe, or what they do not believe.”

Shops stacked with gas cylinders caused Ladipo explosion – LASEMA

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency has said an open land with shanties and shops where gas cylinders were stacked caused the gas explosion which rocked the Ladipo area of the state on Tuesday morning.

LASEMA, in a statement on Facebook, titled, ‘LASEMA battles Ladipo Mushin Gas explosion,’ said it has deployed its Response Team, Eagle Squad at Cappa to contain the situation.

The Agency also said the fire from the explosion has been put under control by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and also the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps.

The statement read, “The Agency’s Response Team, Eagle Squad at Cappa have been deployed to a fire outbreak at Ojekunke Street, Ladipo Mushin today, Tuesday, 16th 2021.

“On getting to the scene, the Response Team discovered an open land with shanties and shops where gas cylinders are stacked.

Akeredolu appoints son Babajide as DG, PPIMU

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has appointed his son Babajide as Director General, Performance and Project Implementation Monitoring Unit (PPIMU).

Babajide’s appointment, which positions him strategically as projects czar, was announced, along with the nomination of 14 commissioners and seven special advisers yesterday.

It was announced by Commissioner for information, Donald Ojogo, amid accusations by loggers that the governor had handed the management of the forest reserves to a company linked with the son.

Ojogo dismissed the latter as smear campaign, but he may find it harder to justify Babajide Akeredolu’s appointment.

Babajide is well educated, indubitably. He had his first degree at New Jersey Institute of Technology in 2010, studying chemical engineering, environmental engineering and business.

Then he went to Colorado School of Mines for a Masters in Chemical Engineering and petroleum refining. He obtained the degree in 2014.

The award-winning media girl took to her Instagram page to proudly announce the launch of her children’s picture book, ‘Ariella & The Talking Drum’ to celebrate her daughter’s second birthday.

Sharing her daughter’s photo in a post on her Instagram page, Stephanie wrote that she got the inspiration for the book from her daughter, Ariella.

17 days after Ikoyi building collapse, another building in Lagos collapses, kills 4

17 days after a 21-storey building collapsed and claimed about 46 lives in the Ikoyi area of Lagos State, another building under construction around Magbon in the Badagry area of the state has killed four construction workers.

It was gathered that the labourers were working on the two-storey building when it collapsed around 1pm on Wednesday.

After the implosion, emergency responders, including members of the community, who rushed to rescue some of the victims, recovered four corpses and saved five others.

A Punch correspondent, who saw a clip showing the deceased workers, noted that there were bloodstains around the scene of the incident.

Residents could be heard lamenting the tragedy, as the remains of the victims were wrapped in cloths.

The Director, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, Margaret Adeseye, said the five survivors sustained varying degrees of injury and were rushed to hospital.

Play Network Studios has released a poster and official title for its forthcoming, highly anticipated project “Hijack 93“.

The movie which was first announced in May is based on a storyline centred around the 1993 hijack of a Nigerian Airways jet by three teenagers.

” Play Network is prepared for a “lift-off” with ace movie producers Rogers Ofime of Native Media and Agozie Ugwu onboard.

In celebrating her academic prowess, her father, the Alaafin of Oyo Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, gave Princess Zainab a brand new whip as a befitting gift for her stellar achievement.

Ralph Udofa’s radio show becomes thesis for UNICAL final year student

An English and Literary Studies final year student of the University of Calabar, Magaret Alfred Ekanem has carried out a full research on one of Hit 95.9 FM Calabar’s program, “The Late Night Sail hosted by popular On Air Personality, Ralph Udofa” as part of the requirement for the award of Bachelor of Arts degree from the university. A remarkable feat and arguably the first from any individual or radio station around here.

The Purpose of Study as cited in Ekanem’s research, titled; ‘A Discourse Analysis of Selected Presentations By Ralph Udofa in Late Night Sail, on Hit FM Radio Station was to practically examine how elements of discourse and conversation analysis can be used to analyze discourse in the radio talk-in-interactions on the show.

The Late Night Sail which runs on Cross River State’s premiere Urban Radio Station, Hitfm Calabar from 10pm to 12am on Mondays to Thursdays, is run on different themes each day, ranging from relationship issues to midnight talks for the listeners. The programme is presented by Award winning On-Air Personality, Ralph Udofa also known as “Fresh R”.

UK’s Queen Elizabeth suffers ‘sprained back’ – Palace

Queen Elizabeth II has a “sprained back” and will miss Sunday’s Remembrance service — her first planned public appearance since resting on medical advice, Buckingham Palace said.

The ceremony honoring fallen troops is close to the monarch’s heart and her absence will deepen concerns over her health after she stepped back on medical advice and spent a night in hospital undergoing unspecified tests at the end of last month.

She then resumed “light duties”, but pulled out of a scheduled attendance at the UN climate change summit in Glasgow after being advised to rest.

“The Queen, having sprained her back, has decided this morning with great regret that she will not be able to attend today’s Remembrance Sunday Service at the Cenotaph,” a palace statement said.

“Her Majesty is disappointed that she will miss the service.”
