Banks’ Contract Workers Rise To 46,235

Full- time workers in the banking industry has been on the decline as contract employees have doubled in the past two years, rising from 20 , 237 to 46 , 235, investigation has revealed .


Figures obtained by our correspondent on Wednesday showed that the number of contract workers in the industry rose from 20 ,237 in the first quarter of 2017 to 32 ,013 at the end of Q 1 2018 .


The figure , which hit 43 ,955 at the end of the second quarter of 2018 , further rose to 46 , 235 at the end of the first quarter of 2019 , according to a report by the National Bureau of Statistics .
Despite the increase in the banks ’ operations , the number of junior workers fell from 40 , 549 in the second quarter of 2018 to 39 , 980 in the second quarter of 2019 , the report added .


As banks embrace cheap labour as a way to cut costs , experts are worried that not many of the lenders are providing additional benefits for such contract employees such as pension savings, healthcare or insurance covers in case of death .

Google changed its logo into a Doodle in honour of Late Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, a teacher, women’s rights activist, political campaigner, and aristocrat, who would have turned 119 today.
 Women’s rights activist & teacher, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti  has being described as the doyenne of female rights in Nigeria, as well as to her being regarded as “The Mother of Africa.”
She was also the first female Nigerian to drive a car.
In 1978 Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti was thrown from a third-floor window in her son Fela’s compound, a commune known as the Kalakuta Republic, when it was stormed by one thousand armed military personnel.
She died on the 13th of April 1978 after being in a coma for about eight weeks as a result of her injuries.

Last night, a 2-storey building collapsed around 8:55pm at No 7, Rufai Street, Ojuelegba, Lagos. This is coming 12 days after the collapse of a 3 storey building at Magodo Phase 1.


The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) had on March 25, 2019, marked the building and warned the residents and the landlord to vacate the premises and served  notice on the landlord on May 21.



The building had been marked for demolition before it collapsed . Immediately it collapsed

officials moved in, to pull the rest of it down.  No one was injured allegedy.

Police rescue 108 at another illegal rehabilitation centre (see photos)

The Kwara State Police Command said it has uncovered another rehabilitation center, Sumuratu Mumeen Arabic Centre, Gaa-Odota Area in Ilorin, where 108 people detained under inhuman condition were rescued.

The State Commissioner of Police, Kayode Egbetokun made this known on Thursday in Ilorin while briefing reporters.

Mr Egbetokun said the command acted on a tipoff and raided the centre where 103 males and five females were discovered unlawfully detained.

Atlanta-based Nigerian jailed for $15m cyber fraud

US Federal prosecutors said an Atlanta, Georgia-based Nigerian, Olufolajimi Abegunde has been sentenced to more than 6 years in prison for his role in an internet fraud scheme that stole an estimated $15m through computer and wire fraud.

The U.S. attorney’s office in Memphis, Tennessee, said on Thursday that the 32-year-old Abegunde was sentenced Tuesday for wire fraud, the second Nigerian to be sentenced in less than a week. Last week in Missouri, another Nigerian, Segun Prosper Otaru was also jailed for cyber fraud.

After his arrest last year, Abegunde lied to Nigerian officials that his arrest was based on mistaken identity and asked for help to get him out of the FBI jaws.

Scientists train rats to drive miniature cars (photos)

Researchers in Virginia have created the rat-operated vehicle (ROV) to test the creatures’ abilities as well as the effect on them of learning a complex skill.

Eleven male rats and six females were taught to drive the electric ROV, which moved forward when the rat grasped wire “handle bars”.

In the first phase, the rodents learnt to enter the vehicle and drive forward in a straight line to retrieve a reward of Froot Loops cereal.

Chrisland school supervisor, Adegboyega Adenekan, 47, has been jailed 60 years today for defiling a 2-year-old child.

Justice Sybil Nwaka of an Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court  handed down the sentence, convicting  Adenekan on a count charge of defilement.

She held that evidence before the court showed that the supervisor was guilty as charged.
