Facebook slapped with record-breaking $5 billion fine for breaching users' privacy

Facebook got slapped with a record-breaking $5 billion fine to resolve a US government probe into its privacy practices.

 

The US Federal Trade Commission said that Facebook has also agreed to restructure its approach to privacy from the corporate board-level down. .

 Mark Zuckerberg will have to personally certify the company's compliance with privacy measures. Failure to do so could result in civil or criminal penalties.

 

FTC Chairman Joe Simons said: "Despite repeated promises to its billions of users worldwide that they could control how their personal information is shared, Facebook undermined consumers’ choices.

"The magnitude of the $5 billion penalty and sweeping conduct relief are unprecedented in the history of the FTC.

"The relief is designed not only to punish future violations but, more importantly, to change Facebook’s entire privacy culture to decrease the likelihood of continued violations."

 It accused the company of deceptive practices when it told users it would collect their phone numbers to enable a security feature, but did not highlight that it used those numbers for advertising purposes, Mirror reports.

Transgender Kenyan woman, Audrey Mbugua wins legal battle to have her name changed on her academic certificates

Transgender activist Audrey Ithibu Mbugua has won a battle against the Kenya National Examinations Council after the Appellate court upheld a decision compelling them to change her academic certificates to reflect ‘her’ new identity.

In 2014, Audrey Mbugua, aka Andrew Ithibu Mbugua, went to court to get the name changed. The High Court ordered the country's education authorities to amend the name on the certificates, but the national examination authority (Knec) appealed against the decision.

They left behind a number of things on the moon, including their poo. According to Metro UK, the Apollo astronauts had been tasked with bringing lots of moon rocks back to earth. But the weight of all these rocks had to be balanced out by leaving some unwanted items behind.

WHO certifies new HIV treatment drug

 

An antiretroviral drug dolutegravir, aka DTG, has been certified safe for use by pregnant women and those in their reproductive years by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Though initial research linked the drug with neural tube defects (NTDs) in infants born to women using dolutegravir at the time of conception, recent studies have shown that it is far more tolerable than the older drug efavirenz, which patients have reported causes depression and hallucinations in the first few months and could lead to people not staying on treatment.

The Lagoon hospital on Wednesday 17th July in Lagos launched it’s newly acquired state of the art equipment in advanced medical care for Lagos residents and other part of Nigeria to help reduce medical tourism.
The Chief Medical Director of Lagoon Hospital Dr Jimi Coker said the hospital in its quest to utilize the latest technology has made significant investment in its critical care Urology, Neurosurgery and the new dialysis center at its Ikoyi facility.

Herdsmen: Alaafin Adeyemi Writes Buhari, Warns Against Looming Anarchy

 

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, sent an open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari and warned him of looming anarchy in the country, if the siege on Yorubaland by herdsmen and kidnappers are not taken serious by the president. Alaafin, who listed the recent spate of insecurity in Yorubaland by herdsmen and their collaborators, lamented that President Buhari was not doing enough in addressing the menace. The monarch said Yorubas had all it takes to resort to self help, unless the security in the zone improves and people are guaranteed safety of their lives and property.
Titled, “Yoruba Question in Nigeria Conundrum”, Alaafin said, “I have never been timid or shy of my total support for the success of your administration to deliver the country to the Promised Land. “My confidence had always been based on Your Excellency’s ability, fitness and competence in leading the country to the Promised Land, where Law and Order prevail, individual liberty is guaranteed, economic well-being of the citizens is assured.

Foursquare Gospel Church Gets New General Overseer, Pastor Samuel Aboyeji

Pastor Samuel Aboyeji, has emerged the new General Overseer of the Foursquare Gospel Church.
This was disclosed in a statement sent to Igbere TV by Ikechukwu Ugbaja, National Secretary of the Church, on Monday.
According to the statement, Aboyeji was elected the fifth General Overseer of the church which started in Nigeria in 1955.
Born in December 26, 1960, Aboyeji retired in March 2010 from Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd (SPDC) to become a full-time minister of the church.
Ugbaja said that expectations are high from the church members and Christian community that the new GO will build on the achievements of the church’s past leaders, particularly the work of Felix Meduoye, the outgoing General Overseer.

Kemi Olunloyo, has called for the sack of Stephanie Busari, the Supervising Producer of Cable News Network (CNN) Africa, over Twitter comments.
Igbere TV reports that Busari had challenged Blogger Olunloyo to provide evidence of working for the company for two decades.
Busari’s challenge came after the Blogger claimed that she has 20-year history with the US based popular cable station.
