Putin honours brigade accused of war crimes in Ukraine

#jaiyeorie  On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin granted an honorary title on a brigade accused of "war crimes" and mass murders in the town of Bucha by Ukraine.

The declaration came on the 54th day of Moscow's military campaign in Ukraine, which has resulted in thousands of deaths and the displacement of 12 million people in Europe's worst refugee crisis since World War II.

Putin's proclamation bestowed the title of "Guards" on the 64th Motor Rifle Brigade in recognition of their "mass heroism and valour, persistence and fortitude" in defending the "Motherland and state interests."

The Ukrainian defense ministry alleged in early April that the unit controlled a village outside of Kyiv and committed "war crimes."

According to Ukrainian authorities, the majority of persons in Bucha perished as a result of gunshot wounds.

Following the withdrawal of Russian soldiers, bodies of men dressed in civilian clothes, some with their wrists bound, were discovered strewn about the streets, causing worldwide outrage.
