Mikel Arteta reacts as Aubameyang misses Arsenal’s 4-0 Win Over Slavia Due to Malaria

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had contracted malaria while on international duty with Gabon.

The player was released from hospital on Thursday after contracting malaria and is ‘feeling good’.

Before the match, the Gabon international posted a picture of him in hospital on social media, explaining why he was not part of the squad in Prague

He wrote on Instagram, “Hey guys, thanks for all the messages and calls. Unfortunately I contracted Malaria whilst being on national team duty in Gabon a few weeks ago.”

The sickness forced him out of the Gunners’ 4-0 Europa League win against Slavia Prague.

And after the match, Arteta said, “We just spoke with him.”

“He’s at home, he’s fine. He’s completely fine at the moment. He had two days in hospital to get the right treatment but he’s feeling good now.

“We’ll see how he recovers.

“I think he will need a few days to recover from that. But he wants to be back as soon as possible, that’s what he said to me.

“He feels really good, that’s what he said to me today. He really wants to be back. If the treatment is efficient it shouldn’t be taking so long.”

Arteta revealed that Aubameyang’s diagnosis came after he had featured in matches since the international break against Liverpool and last week’s first leg Europa League tie.

“When he wasn’t involved against Sheffield the truth is before he wasn’t feeling good but nobody could expect that was the case.

“The doctors did some more tests, some more analytics and that’s when it came on. That’s when the doctors realised very quickly what had to be done and they did a great job. He’s safe and he’s feeling good,” he said.
