Nigerian Attorney Gbenga Oyebode Appointed As New Chairman Of PZ Cussons

Gbenga Oyebode has been unveiled as the new Non-Executive Director and Chairman of the  PZ Cussons Nigeria Plc Board of Directors, the Company’s Secretary, Jacqueline Ezeokwelume announced in compliance with the Nigerian Stock Exchange Listing Rules.

Following the retirement of Alhaji Lawal Tukur Batagarawa as a Non-Executive Director on the Board, Oyebode’s role was made effective from December 11. In case you don’t known, Oyebode is the Chairman of Aluko & Oyebode, one of the largest integrated law firms in Nigeria, where he advises corporations on matters relating to energy and natural resources, telecommunications, project finance, and aviation.

Oyebode is passionate about education and the arts. He serves on the Global Advisory Council of the African Leadership Academy, Africa Advisory Committee of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) and is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a director of Teach for All, and the chairman of Teach for Nigeria.

He also sits on the boards of Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and the Africa Philanthropy Forum, and he is a member board of trustees Ford Foundation, New York, member board of trustees The African Center, New York and director International Lawyers for Africa (ILFA), London.

He is a member of the International Council of Collectors – The Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio, member Advisory Board – Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art, Washington DC and member International Circle, Amis du Centre Pompidou, Paris.

Oyebode holds one of Nigeria’s highest honors, as a member of the Order of the Federal Republic which he received in the year 2000. He was also conferred with the Belgian Royal Honour of ‘Knight of the Order of Leopold’ in 2007.

He was Chairman, Access Bank Plc (2005-2015), Director MTN Nigeria Plc (2001-2019) and the Chairman of Okomu Oil Palm Company Plc (All listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange NSE) and serves on the Boards of MTN Nigeria Limited, Nestle Nigeria Plc, DHL Aviation Nigeria Limited, Lafarge Africa Plc and Socfinaf S.A (listed on the Luxemburg Stock Exchange). He is the Chairman of CFAO Nigeria Plc.

He has been a Barrister & Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria since 1980 and an Attorney at Law of the Supreme Court of New York State since 1983. Oyebode received his undergraduate degree from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife and his masters from the University of Pennsylvania.

He holds bachelor of laws degrees from the University of Ife and the Nigerian Law School, a master of laws degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and he is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the International Bar Association. He is also a graduate of the advanced management program at Harvard Business School.

He was conferred Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa), by the Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti (2016) and Elizade University, Ilara Mokin, Ondo State, Nigeria (2017). He is the Chancellor of Elizade University, Ilara Mokin, Ondo State, Nigeria.

Oyebode is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK) (FCIArb) and the Nigerian Leadership Initiative (NLI). In the past, he was chairman of the Section of Business Law of the Nigerian Bar Association.
