Esimone beats 37 others to emerge UNIZIK VC

Professor Charles Esimone, has defeated 37 other contestants to emerge the vice chancellor of the institution.
The Governing Council of the university has already approved the appointment through a letter dated 14 May 2019 and signed by the pro-chancellor and chairman of the governing council, Alhaji Azeez Bello.
The letter reads: “Please, refer to your application for the above post, dated 1 February 2019, and your interactive session with the Joint Council/Senate Selection Board, held on Tuesday, 14 May 2019, at the University Council Chamber.
“In accordance with the provisions of Section 4 of First Schedule, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Act CAP 139, LFN 2004 as amended by the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Act 2007 Act No 1, I have the pleasure to convey the approval of the Governing Council of your appointment as the Vice-Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
“The appointment, which shall be for a single term of five years, is with effect from Tuesday, 4 June 2019.
“A copy of this letter is being forwarded to the Honourable Minister of Education for the information of the Visitor to the University”
Esimone would succeed Professor Joseph Ahaneku, whose tenure would ends  on June 3, 2019.
Unizik Director of Information and Public Relations, Dr Emmanuel Ojukwu, said yesterday that 38 persons applied for the position, while seven were shortlisted for interview, after which Esimone came first.
“The selection process was competitive and transparent and after the announcement of the new vice chancellor, the contestants hug themselves,” Ojukwu said.
According to him, there is joy in the university community because the selection process was rancour free.
Esimone was born on 31 December 31, 1970, in Tiko, Cameroon. He graduated from St. Joseph’s College Sasse, Cameroon with B.Pham, M. Pharm and PhD from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Until his appointment, Esimone was a Professor of Biopharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Microbiology in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University and was the pioneer dean of the faculty.
