 Butterflies filled décor, pastel pink ambience was the theme as top Nigerian female entrepreneurs came together for an evening dinner to celebrate Nigerian women in business. The event which took place at the Wings Complex, Victoria Island, Lagos was to herald the 2nd edition of #SheMeansBusiness, an initiative by Facebook and She.Leads.Africa  to inspire, empower and train female entrepreneurs across the country to build, grow and start their own businesses


The event tagged ‘Building Your Dream Business’ for entrepreneurs – focused on using platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp to help achieve business goals


The event which took place at the Wings Complex, Ozumba Mbadiwe, Victoria Island Lagos.
was the second edition of #SheMeansBusiness, an initiative by Facebook and She.Leads.Africa designed to inspire, empower and train female entrepreneurs across the country to build, grow and start their own businesses.


The evening commenced with a  saxophone rendition as guests began to arrive. The were over 40 young and enterprising female business owners, leaders, influencers and other stakeholders all sharing interesting stories of the struggle, of wisdom and of experience on the course of running their various businesses was exhilarating. 



A recent Future of Business Study, found that in Nigeria, about 6 in 10 women business owners on Facebook saying that they have a role model, of which over 8 in 10 say that their role model is a woman.

It began with an opening address by Ebele Okobi, Public Policy Director, Africa, Facebook. This was followed closely by presentations by the keynote speaker of the evening, Dr Anino Emuwa, Founder/CEO, Avandis Consulting, who talked about the eco-system of small businesses. She opined that if small businesses connect, they become change makers. 


During a brief panel session moderated by Adaora Ikenze, head of public policy, West Africa, Facebook, female panel members who are all successful business women were able to share experiences and lessons from their entrepreneurship journey.
 It selected a panel which had Tosin Oshinowo, Founder & CEO, CMDesign Atelier; Tara Fela-Durotoye, Founder/CEO, House of Tara and Kemi Lewis, Founder & CEO, KL’s Naturals.


They shared on what inspires,motivates them, what drives their businesses, highpoints and challenges.
Tara Fela-Durotoye, founder/CEO of House of Tara makeup said; “As a business woman, what keeps you grounded are your values and your authenticity. I cannot run a business where people are not being empowered. I didn’t go into business because I wanted to make money, but because I wanted to impact and the only way to do that is to share. As women in business we need to make sure that we are holding other people and bringing them along on the journey.”

Tosin Oshinowo, founder/CEO of CMdesign Atelier said she stumbled on business as a means of survival to take care of herself and her child, believes that everyone can be successful.

“Listen to your gut instincts and be wise to know that sometimes the journey might not be straight. But even when it’s a bit bent, keep your eyes on the ball,” she added.

Speaking on the impact of social media to businesses today, Kemi Lewis, CEO, KL’s natural, a pioneer all natural hair salon that now has three store locations in Lagos, said the online platform is very instrumental in her business.

“Starting a business with specific focus on natural hair, especially at a time when it wasn’t popular to leave out your natural hair without a perm was tasking but social media and my focus helped me a lot,” Lewis added.




Speaking at the event, Sherry Dzinoreva, Head of Policy Programmes, Africa said:


 “#She Means Business is something that we're all passionate about at Facebook, we know that when women do well, economies do well. We were encouraged by the milestones reached last year, and importantly the difference it made to the many women across Nigeria who took part. I'm excited that this year we'll be incorporating students – the business leaders and entrepreneurs of the future. Technology plays an important role in enabling business growth, and by providing the tools and know-how we're determined to see that businesses set up by Nigerian women reach their full potential.” 


Also speaking at the event,Afua Osei, Co-Founder of She Leads Africa said:
“Women form the backbone of a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem. We’re thrilled to continue our partnership with Facebook to provide women entrepreneurs with access to the digital skills and tools required to move their businesses forward on a local, Pan-African and global level.”
 Facebook and SheLeadsAfrica (SLA) #SheMeansBusiness will bring together thousands of female entrepreneurs with a personalised and community based series of day workshops and training sessions under the banner of ‘Building Your Dream Business’ for entrepreneurs – focused on using platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp to help achieve business goals.





 The #She Means Business University Tour will take place across 10 university cities in Nigeria, bringing an interactive business and networking experience to campus, whilst focusing on learning digital marketing skills, creative content development on mobile, and using Instagram and WhatsApp to help drive and build their business in school.Trainings for entrepreneurs will be held across 12 cities .Interested participants should email programs@sheleadsafrica.org
