Guinness Nigeria Plc, a leading beverage and alcohol Company in Nigeria and a subsidiary of Diageo Plc, today announced its unaudited results for its first half year period ended 31st December 2019. The results which were released to the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), showed that revenue increased 1% versus the prior comparable period as strong growth in the second fiscal quarter mitigated the decline from the first quarter. Growth was mainly driven by strong double-digit growth in Brand Guinness and mainstream spirits. Together with growth in the RTD segment, this mitigated the impact of increased excise duty, and the impact of reduced exports on malts.

The cost lines grew in low single digits as improved productivity and volume driven cost absorption mitigated inflationary pressure. The Company’s marketing increased as it continued to focus on growing brands in line with strategy.

'We are devastated' - Kobe Bryant's sisters Shaya & Sharia break their silence following the death of NBA legend and his daughter Gianna in tragic helicopter crash

Sharia Washington, and Shaya Tabb released a joint statement 5 days after their only brother died along with his daughter and seven others in a helicopter crash,  saying they are grieving with the Bryant family.
The statement was accompanied by some personal family photos of themselves with Bryant, 41, as well as others featuring Gianna and their children.

 

In the statement, they wrote: "On behalf of our family, we join Vanessa, Natalia, Bianka, and Capri in grieving the loss of Kobe and Gianna in such a tragic accident. We are devastated by the loss of our brother, son, our niece and granddaughter, and our hearts go out to all the families who lost their loved ones on Sunday. Our lives are forever changed," the sisters said in a statement to NewsOne on Friday. "Thank you for your prayers, the numerous calls, texts, emails, and cards."

President Buhari averts strike, pays lecturers

Federal Government has made a U-turn on its determination not to pay January salary of the staff of the federal universities, polytechnic and colleges of education, thereby aborting the nationwide strike billed to commence on Monday February 3.

It is gathered that the Federal Government has decided to halt its enforcement mechanism for a month with a view that the issues surrounding the scheme would have been sorted out.

The rift between the academic staff of the federal institutions in Nigeria is as a result of the refusal of the academic staff to enroll under the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System, IPPIS, scheme, claiming that it does not accommodate the peculiarities of the academic staff.

Tokyo unveils Olympic 'plaza' made from donated wood

 

Tokyo 2020 Olympic organisers unveiled the "Village Plaza", a key part of the Athletes' Village that is being built from wood donated by municipalities across Japan.

The facility will be a gathering place for athletes and their teams, as well as the site of welcome ceremonies and press briefings during the Games.

The unusual structure is made mostly from wood, with the floors, walls and parts of the roof using timber including larch, Japanese cedar and Japanese cypress.

The vast complex nods to both modern and traditional elements.

The Village Plaza nods to traditional Japanese wood buildings, but incorporates novel structures, including an arch frame structure.

Trump slams visa ban on Nigeria, 5 other countries

President Donald Trump has implemented his threat to restrict the ability of immigrants to travel to the United States from Nigeria and five other countries. It visa ban will be effective from 22 February.

According to reports from Washington D.C, Trump will sign a proclamation approving the restrictions on Friday afternoon.

The proclamation will curb the ability of citizens of Nigeria, Myanmar, Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, Sudan and Tanzania to get certain immigration visas, according to officials with the Department of Homeland Security and State Department, but it is not a blanket travel ban.

Self-made youngest billionaire, Kylie Jenner has sold a 51 percent stake of her Kylie Cosmetics brand to Coty, giving up her majority ownership in the company. The sale ended up being for $600 million to Coty, which also owns brands like Covergirl, OPI, Rimmel, GHD, Clairol, Tiffany & Co. and Balenciaga among other notable beauty and fashion brands.Earlier this year, Forbes estimated Kylie Cosmetics to be worth over $900 million which propelled her to Forbes’ “youngest self-made billionaire” status.
However, Jenner will remain the public face of the brand, and it will be renamed Kylie Beauty.
The $600 million deal values Kylie’s beauty company at $1.2 billion.

Arsenal signs Cedric Soares on loan from Southampton

   

Arsenal have completed the signing of Southampton right-back Cedric Soares on loan until the end of the season.


Soares, whose Southampton contract expires at the end of the current campaign, is Arsenal's second January signing after the Gunners completed a deal to sign defender Pablo Mari on loan from Flamengo earlier this week.

Arsenal's technical director Edu said: "Cedric is a defender with good experience of the Premier League, and of course at international level.
