Azura Power’s First Turbine Connects To Nigeria’s Grid

Deputy Managing Director, Mr Edu Okeke, expressed his pleasure that the commissioning process will start before Christmas: “This festive season is one of the peak periods for electricity consumption in Nigeria and it’s a source of real pride for Azura that we were able to bring our first turbine onto the Grid before Christmas Day.”
The project, whose construction began in January 2016 was anticipated to reach completion in December 2018. But with the vast bulk of the work already completed, the project is currently more than 7 months ahead of schedule. It has also become a standard-bearer for good health and safety practices, having clocked up more than 4 million man-hours of work without a single lost-time injury.
The credit for this high-level performance is shared by the EPC Consortium of Siemens and Julius Berger and all the stakeholders in the project, including, amongst others: the Presidency; NBET; the Nigerian Gas Company (“NGC”); the Transmission Company of Nigerian (“TCN”); the Federal Ministry of Power, Works & Housing; the Federal Ministry of Finance; and the Edo State Government.
NBET, for example, has a team of engineers that have conducted intensive, monthly, on-site monitoring of the works since the first day of construction. NGC has partnered with Azura in the construction of the gas spur line that connects the Escravos Pipeline System to the power plant and in the construction of the pressure reducing and metering station. TCN has also worked assiduously with Azura in the construction of the on-site switchyard and the connection into the neighbouring Benin-North Switchyard.
Meanwhile, the Honourable Ministers of Power and Finance, and their respective Permanent Secretaries, have provided unstinting moral support for the project; whilst His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Edo State, has constantly challenged the project team to “work faster, better and safer”.
The success, to date, of the project is also a reflection of the close cooperation and strong and consistent support that it has received from the three local communities of Ihovbor, Orior-Osemwende; and Idunmwowina and from the palace of His Royal Majesty, the Oba of Benin.
Whilst there is still some way to go and challenges to overcome, the project’s management team is confident that all parties will continue to work together to enable the power plant to reach full commercial operations well ahead of schedule.
Full Cycle
Today’s milestone also marks the historic completion of an industry chain where all the links are forged together through commercially negotiated contracts. Siemens and Julius Berger built the plant under the terms of the EPC Contract. The gas that was used to generate today’s electricity was supplied by Seplat PLC and the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company in accordance with the Gas Supply & Purchase Agreement. NGC transported the gas to the site in line with the Gas Transportation Agreement. The electrons generated were then transmitted across the country’s high voltage network by TCN per the Grid Connection Agreement. These same electrons were then bought by NBET under the terms of the Power Purchase Agreement and sold to the eleven distribution companies (“Discos”) under the Vesting Contracts between NBET and the Discos. Hence, for consumers and investors alike, the catalytic power of this value chain was on full display yesterday.
The successful firing of Azura’s first turbine is also a key milestone in the Government’s Power Sector Recovery Plan (“PSRP”) which aims to increase the security of electricity supply for millions of Nigeria’s homes and businesses.
The Impact on Investor Confidence
The debt financing for this $900m project is provided by a consortium of 15 banks from 9 different countries, including most of the European development finance institutions. The Azura-Edo IPP is also the first Nigerian power project to benefit from both the World Bank’s “Partial Risk Guarantee” structure and the political risk insurance supplied by the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency.
For each of the banks that have invested in the Azura-Edo IPP, the project has become a litmus test of the Government’s commitment to the sanctity of contract. In many emerging markets, one of the principal anxieties faced by project-financed IPP investors pertains to payment risk (i.e. will the government offtaker pay in full and on time). However, the leadership of NBET has consistently advised investors to put aside such negative sentiments; and the Azura-Edo IPP is proof of the trust reposed by the international investment community in the full faith and credit of the Nigerian government.
Moreover, tangible evidence of this creditworthiness will be furnished in January 2018 when Azura submits its first invoice to NBET for the power produced during the commissioning of the first turbine. Even though the sums involved are relatively small, the symbolism of this will be noted by investors around the world and will, no doubt, help to boost the country’s credit rating during the first quarter of next year.

FG Willing To Resell Yola Disco At Much Cheaper Price

According to a source, the Federal Government is willing to sell the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (Yola Disco) at a cheaper price compared to how much other power distribution companies were sold for during the privatisation process in 2013, IWIN reports.

But the source lamented that despite government’s resolve in this regard, it is still yet to find any investor interested in operating the utility company two years after Integrated Energy and Distribution Marketing Company (IEDM), the core investor in the company declared a force majeure due to the Boko Haram insurgency and handed it back to the government.

The source stated that the government had been experiencing a tough time finding a new buyer even at a giveaway price for which the company is being offered for sale. “The Boko Haram insurgency has affected the sale. No investors, foreign and even local, are willing to stake their funds there because of the security challenges,” he said.

Benin Withdrew Globacom’s Licence

The telecom regulator of Benin has withdrawn the license of the local unit of the Nigerian mobile telecommunications company Globacom in a dispute over new conditions, according to a document released Tuesday. The regulator, ARCEP-Benin, said it had made the decision, after negotiations with Glo Mobile Benin, to renew its license broken down earlier this month after the company refused the new conditions imposed by the government. The heads of the parent company, owned by Nigeria's billionaire Mike Adenuga, were not immediately available for comment.
The ARCEP document did not say what the government’s new conditions were, but a source close to the regulator, who asked not to be named, said they included an increase in the cost of the licence.
Glo Mobile Benin said it had over 1.6 million subscribers in 2015, according to the most recent statistics available on ARCEP’s website.
Globacom also operates mobile networks in Nigeria and Ghana.

Public Toilets Good For Biogas Production – Expert

A waste management expert, Prof. Oladele Osibanjo, on Wednesday, said public toilets could be used as resource centres for the production of biogas if properly harnessed.
Osibanjo, is the President, Waste Managers Society of Nigeria (WAMSON), made this known in Lagos.
According to Wikipedia, Biogas typically refers to a mixture of different gases produced by the breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen.
“Biogas can be produced from raw materials such as agricultural waste, manure, municipal waste, plant material, sewage, green waste or food waste.’’
Osibanjo urged the Federal and State Governments to start looking at the public toilets in an innovative way and invest in building more.
“In some countries, public toilets have been turned to opportunities of using human waste to make biogas for cooking.
“Public toilets are no longer seen as a nuisance, but as agents to create a green economy.
“Unfortunately in Nigeria, public toilets are inadequate, grossly inefficient and poorly maintained.
“Some public toilets are eyesores and so unhygienic with many people patronising them, even with the scarcity of water,’’ the WAMSON president said.
Osibanjo said that many people residing in urban areas did not have access to good toilet systems.
He said that they resorted to throwing faeces and excrement in open places, drainage channels, rivers and dump sites.
The waste manager urged the Federal and State Governments to build more public toilets in strategic places and outsource to experts for conversion of human waste to biogas.
The WAMSON president said that when human waste was not properly managed, it always lead to outbreaks of diseases associated with poor sanitary conditions.

Majek Fashek & Daddy Freeze Trade Words On COZA Concert

Reggae musician, Majek Fashek, has called out  Daddy Freeze, for his strong disapproval of his recent performance at a church concert in Abuja.
Majek the ‘Rainmaker’ who, before now, had not performed at faith-based events, did on Sunday December 17 at the Commonwealth of Zion Assembly Christmas Carol in Guzape, Abuja.
Daddy Freeze, who also recently condemned the practice of ‘tithing’ in churches, said it made no sense for a secular artiste like Majek to perform in such gathering, as Christian altars are supposed to be sacred.
However, Majek Fashek’s manager, Uzoma Omenka, in a video on Instagram, rebuked Daddy Freeze saying that nothing was wrong with a secular artiste performing in church.
“There is nothing wrong with a world class legend, Majek Fashek, whose music sends the right message, to be invited to perform in any church.
“To Daddy Freeze, you need to do your research properly before wagging your mouth and speaking like a kid,” he said.
“@biodunfatoyinbo thank you once more for impacting positively on the lives of young Nigerians and making them believe in themselves.”
Daddy Freeze had taken to his Instagram to condemn the rainmaker crooner over the concert, saying: “I am still searching for the sense in this. I am a huge Majek fan, but do I want to see him perform in a church?
“How did we get here? Maybe I’m wrong, but I thought Christian altars are supposed to be sacrosanct…
“Have you ever seen an artiste like Majek perform in a Buddhist or Hindu temple?
“Can Majek perform inside the Okija’ shrine? or the `soppona’ or `ayelala’ shrine?
“If other religions value their altars and keep them sacred, is it out of place to suggest we do the same?”#Africa ... spill TEA.... Easy on Shade #jaiyeorie

“Okorocha Is Not A Role Model For Anything”-Pat Utomi Slams

Patrick Okedinachi Utomi, a Nigerian professor of political economy and management expert, dismissed Imo State governor Rochas Okorocha as unworthy of being described as a role model. The economics professor said in an interview with SaharaTV, in reaction to Okorocha's commentary on the current administration's performance.
When asked; “governor Rochas Okorocha just said that 89% of Nigerians are not satisfied with the Buhari administration, do you agree with him?” Mr. Utomi chuckled then questioned how the governor came about the statistics.
“My goodness, I don’t know where he did the survey and I am not quite sure Governor Rochas Okorocha Is a role model for anything,” Mr. Utomi said.
However, he conceded that the APC led federal government has not fulfilled many of its manifestos. He also acknowledged that the party was not as organized as it should be when it got to power, adding that this was the reason for some of the “hijacks” earlier witnessed in the party.
He said; “We have just come from nearly two decades of a political party that has a certain culture that has taken our country very far. Unfortunately, I don’t think our party was as well organized when it got to power as it should be. So, a bit of hijack took place.
“A lot of work was done to show a way forward. I am sure you’ve heard the Vice President say that what was supposed to be the road-map for the APC, the manifesto, was written in my house by himself, myself and one or two other persons. I am not sure what we wrote is what we are quite seeing”
Nonetheless, he opined that ills of almost 20 years cannot be cleared in barely two years.
He stated that the leadership of the country must take developmental issues seriously. “I really think we are in such a situation that we need to play down partisan items because our country is on the verge of dying. We have population growth at nearly 3 percent. We have a huge youth bulge. Right now, the police is as far as it can be from harvesting a demographic dividend.
“If Nigeria does not run policy in the direction of investing heavily in education and healthcare and providing opportunities for these young people, what Nigeria will reap is already is … anarchy.
We anarchy comes, it does not matter what you have put away for your children, everybody goes down.

Miss Nigeria beauty Show Defining Nigerian Woman – Fidelis Anosike

Miss Nigeria, the pageant’s organiser and publisher of The Daily Times of Nigeria, Mr Fidelis Anosike, says he is using the show to define the Nigerian woman.
Miss Nigeria will be crowned at the Eko Convention Centre on Thursday, making her the 41st after Chioma Obiadi from Anambra who won the 2016 edition.
Miss Nigeria, formed in 1957 with the Motto, “Empowering Women Beyond Beauty’’, is an annual beauty pageant show which showcases positive attributes of Nigerian women and awards university scholarships.
The winner portrays exemplary qualities and serves as a role model for young women in the country. The pageant is organised by Daily Times Nigeria (DTN).
The current title holder is a Geology student of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, and former Miss Earth Nigeria Chioma Stephanie Obiadi, who represented Anambra.
The journey to this year’s finale started in November when auditions were held in three cities of Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Lagos within over a one-week period.
From personal photography sessions from Studio 24, using cool photo props, there were also monopoly games and passion project activities to keep the ladies entertained with refreshments.
The auditions started at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja on Nov. 7 with an impressive turnout of contestants from the Northern region who showed up for a chance to become the next queen.
The contestants were judged by George Okoro (Photographer and Lifestyle Magazine Publisher), Adama Indimi (CEO Reign by Adama Lashes), Ogugua Okonkwo (CEO Style Temple) and Andy Ogbechei (Creative Director, A-Squared Network).
They served as the guest judges at this phase of the auditions, accompanied by Enyinne Owunwanne (CEO, Times Multimedia – organisers of the Miss Nigeria pageant).
The team moved to Port Harcourt on Nov. 9 to receive contestants from the South-South/South-East region at the Echelon Heights Hotel, before heading to Lagos where the audition was held at the Times Multimedia, Lagos Headquarters.
From there, the 37 semi-finalists were announced in a special Instagram Live Session, setting the stage for Thursday’s grand finale.
The boot-camp ended on December 18, after which the girls went to Ilorin to meet the first ever Miss Nigeria, 86-years-old Mama Grace Oyelude.
NAN reports that in 2005, Anosike, young and bustling, took over a decapitated Daily Times and set out to revamp the vintage legacy of the publication.
He has since set his sights on rewriting the story of Miss Nigeria and graft in new chapters filled with hope, dignity, and value.
“For us, Daily Times, Miss Nigeria is one and the same,’’ Anosike said on Tuesday, shedding light on what Nigerians should expect,” he said on Tuesday in Lagos.
“The show is going to be the premier platform that the company’s products, services, and different people can use to connect to every woman.
“Every woman is a queen. What we’ve been doing over the past 10 years is to get the Pageant to metamorphose into what it should be.
“This year, we are going from strength to strength. Every state has got its own representative. And it’s also important to note that Miss Nigeria is 60 years old having been founded in 1957.
“This year, we are also able to do a proper boot-camp; all the semi-finalists met with several prominent Nigerians, including the Director-General of The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), who is the purpose-partner for this year’s pageant.
“This year’s Miss Nigeria will be crowned as the ambassador for Human Trafficking, and she will spend her time and energy working with NAPTIP to raise awareness about the ills of human trafficking and try as much as possible to contribute her quota to ending the illicit trade.
“We also had a couple of top women personalities who went into the boot-camp to talk to the girls.’’
Anosike said that Miss Nigeria had been fully restored to its original intent, which is to be a platform for young female empowerment in Nigeria,
“We want to use it to raise the voices of women. We believe that every Miss Nigeria will also take on these issues, raising the voices of women, especially as it relates to issues around the environment.
“We have very solid partnerships with over 30 media houses and everybody has now come to understand that this is a national pageant and not a beauty pageant,’’ he said.
On plans to balance the moral debauchery associated with beauty pageants, Anosike said about the content of Miss Nigeria that “it’s all about communication, about purpose; it is about people understanding that this is a platform for female empowerment.
“Every woman is a queen — mothers are queens, sisters are queens. This epitomises ‘queenship’. Miss Nigeria is supposed to be a role model for young women.
“What we are doing is building a purpose into the show, so, it is beauty and brains. The idea is to be able to inspire young women.
“We don’t do all those beauty pageant stuff where they go onstage and take off their clothes.
“We don’t commoditise women. Miss Nigeria has stopped that a long time ago. And that’s one of the reasons why we don’t send anybody to Miss World or Miss Universe because they go there and do all these kind of things.
“Miss Nigeria focuses on issues that affect Nigerian women; she is an ambassador of culture, of purpose, of the environment. We want her to focus on the Nigerian people,’’ he said.
The publisher of The Daily Times of Nigeria said that Miss Nigeria did not need any validation from anywhere, adding that she did not need to go outside to win anything. It’s a national brand, not a beauty brand.
“The girls have their calendars planned and we have partners that will keep them busy because we want them to have a purpose. Going for international beauty contest is a colonial mentality.
“Queens don’t compete, they reign. You can’t say you are Nigeria’s Queen and go outside and be competing with other people.’’
On the challenge in organising the event, Anosike said it was the struggle to recreate the show’s purpose.
“The basic challenge we had was to be able to recreate the purpose for which this pageant was founded in 1957,’’ he said.
“Now, we have got it right; and we know this because of the responses we are receiving. We have people entering from Zamfara; from Kano.
“It’s going to be a beautiful show. We are trying to make the show like the Oscars, so it will be a fusion of fashion, beauty and everything good about Nigeria.
“The contestants have to know about the states they are representing. We also want to use this to help to promote our history and heritage. We must be proud of who we are.
“Nigeria has come of age; we’ve seen what people have done in the music industry. That’s the kind of inspiration that we want to draw on.’’
Anosike also said that when the pageant started, then, contestants were required to post their photographs to the Times headquarters in Lagos, before the finalists were shortlisted and invited to compete at the Lagos Island Club.
He said it was the premier pageant in the country, and was a powerful medium which empowered several young Nigerian women, and inspired the country as a whole.
The pageant will be hosted by Bovi, Ebuka, Olive Emodi and Lala Akindoju; and 2face Idibia is set to perform.#Africa ... spill TEA.... Easy on Shade #jaiyeorie

Why The MTV Africa Music Awards Didn’t Hold In 2017

The MTV Africa Music Awards 2017, did not take place in 2017. The award ceremony, which has lasted for 6 years, appears to be a no-show this year, and if that happens, it will mark the first time, that prices will not be held over the past 3 years. The MTV Africa Music Awards (also known as MAMAs) were created in 2008 by MTV Networks Africa (now Viacom International Media Networks Africa) to celebrate the most popular contemporary music in Africa. It was designed and created by MTV Networks' SVP and MD in Africa, Alex Okosi. Earlier, African artists had been included in the MTV Europe Music Award, where MTV Base Africa viewers voted the best African performer at the 2006 and 2007 MTV Europe Music Awards. The first concert was held at the Abuja Velodrome in Nigeria on November 22, 2008 and aired worldwide on November 29 in collaboration with Airtel and local TV stations in Africa. The show was hosted by Trevor Nelson. Prizes were preceded by four concerts in different cities celebrating the musicians nominated for awards. Award-winning categories include Artist of the Year, Best Alternative, Best Woman, Best Group, Best Hip-Hop, Best Live Performance, Best Man, Best New Act, Best R & B, Video of the Year and MY Video Awards which allows viewers to make their own version of a video clip. The 2009 edition was held in Nairobi, Kenya, at the Moi International Sports Center in October 2009. In 2010, the awards were again presented to Nigeria at Eko Expo Hall in Lagos. This year, certain award categories were to better reflect the music of the entire continent, creating awards for the best English-speaking artists, better Portuguese speakers and better francophones.
After a 3-year hiatus, Viacom International Media Networks Africa announced that the MTV Africa Music Awards would return in June 2014. The event took place at the ICC, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal on July 18 2015, and the sixth edition took place in Johannesburg, South Africa on October 22, 2016 at the Ticketpro Dome. The MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) is the continent’s most influential award which recognises and rewards musicians and achievers who have made the most impact on African music and youth culture,” says Alex Okosi, Executive Vice President and Managing Director of Viacom International Media Networks Africa (VIMN Africa) in an email to Pulse. “At Viacom International Media Networks Africa we have been working to reinvent the MAMA to create a deeper music experience that will be more immersive for our fans and partners in 2018.”
He continued: “The campaign will continue to be fully reflective of the continent’s great music and lifestyle that is shaping the continent. It’s important to emphasize that all the great music that has emerged during the period from the last MAMA and the next will be recognized for accolades.”
“The MAMA campaign requires collaboration with the industry, partners and broadcasters to bring this world class event to life.”
