Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos State, inaugurated 1,000 brand new saloons and sport utility vehicles on Wednesday as the pilot cars for the Lagos ride taxi scheme, also known as LAGRIDE.
The e-hailing cab system is part of a cooperative venture between the state government and a Chinese automaker that also includes the construction of a car assembly factory in Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu, speaking at the occasion at Lagos House in Ikeja, hailed the initiative as a promise kept, since it was part of his administration's commitment to improve mobility in line with Lagos' megacity status.

He added that the modern ride service is also part of his government's socio-economic intervention programs, since potential drivers can pay for their automobiles in four-year installments.

Sanwo-Olu asked the Chinese Automobile Manufacturing Company to expand the capacity of its state-of-the-art automobile assembly plant.

He claimed that Lagos is already transitioning from the period of rickety vehicles to the use of safe contemporary vehicles for transportation.

The program, according to Sanwo-Olu, will create jobs, accelerate socioeconomic progress, and further establish the state as a global center of excellence and a contemporary megacity committed to sustainable development.
