Indonesian court throws out petition to ban sex outside marriage

The Constitutional Court of Indonesia rejected a petition to criminalize consensual sex outside of marriage.  The petition was filed by a group of conservative academics, who argued that the provisions of the penal code on adultery should extend to sexual relationships involving single people.  The petitioners also wanted sex between people of the same sex to be prohibited.  Five judges from the panel of nine judges rejected the petition.  The judges who rejected the petition argued that it was not in line with the civil liberties granted by the constitution.  They also said that the court had no authority to criminalize the activities.  Indonesia is the largest Muslim country in the world, where many see sex outside of marriage as taboo.
