The defender William Troost‑Ekong — widely known simply as “Ekong” — has announced his retirement from international football, bringing a decade‑long chapter with Super Eagles to a close. The 34‑year‑old said it has been “the greatest privilege” to represent Nigeria, and while this phase ends, his support for the national team will endure.
During his time in green and white, Ekong earned 83 caps, scored several important goals, and featured in five major tournaments — including the Olympics, the FIFA World Cup, and multiple editions of the Africa Cup of Nations. As captain, he led by example, emerging as one of the most trusted leaders in the squad and graduating from a debutant in 2015 to the go‑to defensive pillar.
His retirement marks the end of an era for the Super Eagles — one defined by resilience, passion, professionalism and unwavering pride. Ekong leaves behind a legacy that young Nigerians will remember, and a path for the next generation to follow.
