In a bold move, Nollywood veteran Bimbo Akintola has joined a growing chorus of industry insiders shedding light on the sometimes questionable financial practices of her colleagues. In a recent interview, Bimbo, known for her candid nature, revealed that she often asks her fellow actors how they manage to live such extravagant lifestyles while she, by comparison, is not as financially fortunate. According to Bimbo, it’s a common occurrence for people to approach her and ask why some Nollywood stars seem to have so much more money. She’s quick to clarify that she isn’t as wealthy as some might think—and she’s not afraid to ask her colleagues where their wealth comes from.
The actress didn’t shy away from addressing the rumors that swirl within the industry, admitting that some of her colleagues have financial backing from wealthy politicians or come from affluent families. The harsh reality is that, for many, acting alone isn’t enough to fund a lavish lifestyle. This revelation has sparked new conversations about the financial disparity in Nollywood, and it’s not the first time someone has raised the issue.
Just a few months ago, Yoruba actor Funsho Adeolu voiced his own suspicions, questioning how some actresses in the industry drive luxury cars and flaunt wealth while earning less than their male counterparts. Adeolu, who claims to charge higher fees for his roles, suggested that something beyond acting is at play. In a similar vein, comedian Ali Baba also raised concerns, pointing out that some actresses boast millionaire homes and vacations far beyond what their acting salaries could support. He even recounted a story of meeting an actress in Dubai whose lavish trip was entirely sponsored, yet she portrayed it online as though she had paid for it herself.
Kunle Remi, during a podcast appearance, echoed these sentiments, revealing how baffled he is when female colleagues drive more expensive cars to set, knowing full well what their salaries are. And Angela Okorie joined the conversation, urging her colleagues to stop pretending that acting alone finances their lifestyles. She emphasized that many are involved in side hustles or other ventures that they rarely speak of publicly.
But as more actors come forward with these revelations, one burning question remains: **Is it time for Nollywood to confront the uncomfortable truths about its financial ecosystem—and can the industry thrive on transparency rather than illusion?**
“Some of the lifestyles we see on social media can be real, and if it’s real, where does it come from? People come up to me and say, look at those actresses. They are very rich, and I tell them that I am now rich.
I still ask them what they do because we know how much they sell films. From a lot of actresses I see, I don’t know if it’s from their rich homes or if there are other businesses they’re doing.
We have heard about actresses dating politicians and all of that, and we know things like that truly happen”.
