Warner Bros., the studio behind the comic book franchise, has suspended developing new films centering on Superman, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
According to the network, DC Films and Warner Bros. are shifting their attention to female-centric characters, the most important being a new Supergirl movie. They reportedly are also prioritizing the Harley Quinn “Birds of Prey” spinoff — with Margot Robbie reprising her role as the crazed antihero — along with Todd Phillips’ standalone Joker film, and a “Wonder Woman” sequel.
Cavill first starred as Superman in in 2013’s “Man of Steel,” and later joined Ben Affleck’s Batman for “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Justice League.” The latter two faltered at the box office and were panned by critics.
A new “Superman” sequel was previously reported to be in development, but no plan has been set, especially since the departure of director Zack Snyder, who helped relaunch the character and drafted Cavill to assume the role.
While his role as Superman appears blurry, Cavill had a busy summer, co-starring with Tom Cruise in “Mission: Impossible – Fallout.” He also will appear in the Netflix adaptation of “The Witcher.”
