George Weah Becomes Liberia's 25th President

Retired footballer George Weah won the elections in Liberia to become the 25th president of the country.  Senator of Montserrado County - a former Fifa World player and winner of the coveted Golden Ball - defeated his 73-year-old vice-president, Joseph Boakai, in a landslide victory in the results announced in Liberia on Thursday.  "I am deeply grateful to my family, friends and loyal supporters who contributed to our campaign during this long election period," Weah said on Twitter before the announcement of the results.  Weah should replace the first woman head of state, economist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, and see the West African nation, founded by freed American slaves, cede the power of a democratically elected government to another.
