The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control NAFDAC, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, has knocked Nigerians blaming the agency for the circulation of fake food products in the market.
In recent times, Nigerians have complained over the alarming rate of fake food products in circulation. Over the weekend, actress Ruth Kadiri raised alarm after purchasing ‘fake ginger’'.
According to her, regulation of fresh food products is not within the powers of NAFDAC but the Ministry of Agriculture. According to Professor Adeyeye, NAFDAC only regulates processed and semi-processed food items.
If fake products are reaching Nigerian shelves, where exactly does NAFDAC's responsibility end — and where does everyone else's begin?
Because consumers don't experience government agencies separately.
They experience one market.
If a fake product is manufactured, imported, distributed, displayed in a shop and finally purchased by a consumer, there are multiple points where the system can potentially fail.
The debate isn't simply “Is NAFDAC doing its job?” It is also “Can one regulator police an entire supply chain on its own?”
