What happens when one of America's most powerful political figures clashes with one of its most influential athletes?
For Donald Trump and LeBron James, the answer is another public confrontation.
On October 22, 2026, Trump criticised James after a video appeared to show the NBA star stretching and practising basketball movements while the American national anthem played before the Philadelphia 76ers' season opener against the New York Knicks.
Trump described James as a “TOTAL DISGRACE” and demanded an apology to American military personnel and those who died defending the country.
James did not respond with an extended political argument. After the 76ers' home game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, he dismissed the controversy with a brief remark: “It's a slow news day at the office.”
The exchange revived a rivalry that has repeatedly placed sports, politics and celebrity influence in the same conversation.
What actually happened between LeBron James and Donald Trump?
The latest controversy began at Madison Square Garden in New York on October 20, when the Philadelphia 76ers faced the Knicks.
During the national anthem, James appeared to continue warming up while other players around him mostly stood still. Trump subsequently shared a video of the moment on social media and accused the basketball star of disrespecting the United States.
However, the footage alone does not establish James's intentions. Trump interpreted his movements as disrespectful, but James's actions should not automatically be treated as proof that he intended to insult the country.
Their disagreement goes back years.
In September 2017, James called Trump a “bum” after the president withdrew a White House invitation to the Golden State Warriors following disagreements surrounding the team's proposed visit.
James also criticised Trump's approach to presidential leadership, arguing that the president's words and conduct mattered because children looked to the office for guidance.
The disagreement intensified in 2018 when Fox News host Laura Ingraham told James and fellow NBA player Kevin Durant to “shut up and dribble” after they discussed politics.
James rejected the idea that athletes should restrict themselves to sports. He argued that athletes could use their public platforms to address issues affecting society.
The dispute consequently became about more than personal dislike. It raised a broader question: should successful athletes be expected to remain silent on political and social issues?
The 2026 controversy is about more than the national anthem
For Trump, the latest incident became a question of patriotism and respect for national symbols.
For James, the wider history of their relationship includes disagreements over political leadership, social justice and the responsibilities of public figures.
These are different questions, and separating them helps explain why the controversy attracts such strong reactions.
A person can believe that standing respectfully during a national anthem is important without automatically accepting every criticism Trump makes. Equally, supporting an athlete's right to express political opinions does not require agreeing with everything that athlete says or does.
The presidency gives Trump's statements a reach that an ordinary social-media user does not possess. When a president publicly criticises a celebrity, the comments can become a national news story within hours.
James also has considerable influence. His basketball achievements, commercial profile, public platform and involvement in social causes have made him one of the most recognisable athletes in the United States.
Their confrontation therefore brings together two different forms of public power: political authority and celebrity influence.
Neither automatically makes a person right. Both, however, can shape what millions of people discuss.
The attention also benefits the broader news cycle, in which a short video and a few provocative remarks can generate days of commentary.
Does LeBron James have to agree with Trump?
No. Political disagreement is a normal feature of public life.
James has endorsed Democratic presidential candidates in previous elections, including Hillary Clinton in 2016, Joe Biden in 2020 and Kamala Harris in 2024. His political positions have been publicly different from Trump's on several issues.
That history helps explain why their interactions are often interpreted through a political lens.
But disagreement should not be confused with proof of personal hostility in every situation. Nor does an athlete's political position settle whether a particular action was appropriate.
The national anthem controversy can be examined on its own merits while recognising the history that makes it so politically charged.
The bigger issue: Who gets to speak beyond their profession?
The LeBron-Trump feud reflects a recurring argument about celebrity responsibility.
People might believe athletes should concentrate on their sport and avoid political commentary. Others argue that being a professional athlete does not cancel a person's citizenship or right to speak about public affairs.
James has consistently rejected the idea that he should remain silent simply because basketball is his profession.
Trump's latest criticism has reopened that argument, but it has not resolved it. The public is still divided over how patriotism should be expressed, what respect for national symbols looks like and whether public figures should be judged differently from ordinary citizens.
It is how political leaders and celebrity figures use their platforms—and how audiences decide whether their actions deserve support or criticism.
What do you think? Was Trump's criticism of LeBron James justified by the footage, or did the president turn an ordinary pre-game moment into another political confrontation?
