Egbetokun OUT Tunji Disu is the new IGP of Nigeria



 Nigeria got a major security leadership change this week as President Bola Tinubu accepted the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun as the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and approved the appointment of Tunji Disu as the new Acting IGP with immediate effect.

🟒 June 19, 2023: Kayode Egbetokun was appointed the 22nd Inspector-General of Police by President Tinubu. 
🟒 February 24–25, 2026: Egbetokun submitted his resignation letter citing pressing family considerations, which the President accepted at a meeting in the Presidential Villa in Abuja. 
🟒 Immediate Appointment: Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu was approved to serve as Acting IGP and has since been sworn in and decorated at the Presidential Villa. 


 Official Statement — What the Presidency Said
According to a formal press release by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President:
President Tinubu expressed “profound appreciation” for Egbetokun’s years of service and contribution to internal security. 

The appointment of Tunji Disu is seen as a strategic move to provide focused direction for the Nigeria Police Force amid ongoing national security challenges. 

 The next step is to convene the Nigeria Police Council to consider Disu’s formal confirmation as substantive IGP before his name is transmitted to the Senate for approval.

Tunji Disu is a career police officer with decades of operational and intelligence experience. Before becoming Acting IGP, he served in senior leadership positions within the Nigeria Police Force, including assignments at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID). 

According to reports, Disu was just months away from mandatory retirement before the new appointment, but under the amended Police Act, he could now serve a full four-year term as IGP if confirmed.
