Nollywood actress and producer Osas Ighodaro has reflected on her first decade in Nigeria, describing her decision to relocate from the United States as a life-changing move she remains grateful for.
The actress shared the reflection in September 2022, marking ten years since she embarked on the journey back to Nigeria. Although she initially intended to stay for just 6 months, an opportunity to work on the television series Tinsel changed the direction of her plans.
Ighodaro, a co-host at the recently held Headies award in Atlanta, said the trip to Nigeria ten years ago has changed her life forever.
“10 years ago, on this day, I embarked on a journey to Nigeria – not my first trip to Naija – but certainly a trip that changed my life….forever,” said Ighodaro.
“For me, the element of water encapsulates a beautiful representation of my time in Naija thus far; my flow, my fight and my freedom.
“I was meant to stay in Naija for just six months and here I am 10 years later. I’m forever grateful for my journey thus far and I look forward to what’s to come. God’s plan is always the best and I’m grateful to celebrate this,” she said.
To mark the milestone, the actress shared a professionally choreographed dance video on Instagram, featuring Fela Kuti's song Water No Get Enemy.
Osas was born and raised in New York and had already begun building her acting career in the United States before her Nigerian opportunity. Her return introduced her to a wider Nigerian audience through Tinsel and opened the door to further opportunities in Nollywood.
Looking back, her story illustrates how a temporary professional opportunity can become a defining career decision. What began as a six-month stay ultimately developed into a decade-long journey in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
