Nigerian lawmakers propose N2m fine and Two-year jail term for Codeine and Tramadol abuse

An amendment bill passed in the House of Representatives yesterday proposed an N2 million fine and a 2-year prison for the tramadol and codeine abuses.   The bill, which seeks to change the Food, Medicines and Related Products Act (Registration, etc.). The F33 Law of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 to review penalties and grant jurisdiction to the state High Court to try violations under the Act, was sponsored by Betty Apiafi (Betty Apiafi, PDP Rivers) to pass in the second reading yesterday.   During the debate, Apiafi said: "In Nigeria, between January and December 2015, a patient and forty-four (1044) patients were admitted for treatment at 11 treatment centers currently in Nigeria Epidemiological Network of Drug Use (NENDU) system ".   He said that since 2015, Codeine is almost pursuing Tramadol as the most abusive opiate in Nigeria. "Thousands of Nigerian youths have become addicted to Codeine syrup syrup - a drug that has become a street drug. Three million bottles are drunk every day in North's Nigeria alone, according to a recent Nigerian government report . "   The new bill sets penalties for individuals up to the tune of the N500,000 or a prison term of two years or both; and in the case of a corporate body, all directors, overseers, partners, overseers commit an offense and punish themselves if they have committed an offense.
