Lagos State announces plan to review its Child Rights law to widen the scope of punishable offences and persons

The Lagos State Government revealed that its Children's Rights Act is being revised to expand the scope of offenses and punishable persons and to adapt to current realities. The Permanent Secretary and Minister of Justice Funlola Odunlami, who revealed this in her office, said that some of the penalties provided by law have not served to deter child abusers from engaging in such acts. where the need to review the law on the rights of the child.   The Permanent Secretary, who spoke at a stakeholder meeting on "The Amendment and Implementation of the Law on the Rights of the Child, 2015" reaffirmed that the goal was to put the Emphasis on the empowerment of children, she added that the review would take into account the necessary framework that would be useful throughout the review process, ensuring that the outcome would be more beneficial for all stakeholders concerned with Odunlami listed the sections of the law that are examined as Section 3, 7, 13, 17, 19, 20-23, among others.   The sections, she says, range from parental neglect, punishment, forms of punishment for offenders, and the inclusion of those responsible for facilitating the minor or forced marriage of a girl in punishable persons, including under the child Rights law. The Solicitor General expressed the hope that participants from governmental, non-governmental and private organizations would produce a stronger recommendation that would take into account the interests of all concerned.
