Teenager Attempts To Assassinate Queen Elizabeth

A teenager's attempt to murder the Queen during her visit to New Zealand in 1981 was concealed by the police, showing newly declassified documents. During the royal parade through the city of Dunedin, Christopher John Lewis, 17, hid in a toilet stall and shot Queen Elizabeth II when she got out of her Rolls Royce. Stuff portal reported Thursday. Although Lewis was arrested, he was never charged, and the national and international media who had heard the shot were informed that it was a sign of the council that had fallen. The New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) has now released previously classified information after Stuff reported on the historic assassination attempt in January. According to Stuff, the SIS memo shows that Lewis appeared on a first charge of robbery and burglary and that there was no intention to accuse Lewis of treason during the police investigation. "Lewis did indeed intend to murder the Queen, but had no appropriate point of view to shoot, nor a rifle powerful enough to reach the target," according to an SIS memo that would confirm the assassination attempt . . Former police officer Tom Lewis, who was originally assigned to the Lewis case, claimed that political interference came into play for fear that the country would lose future royal tours due to the security, Stuff reported.
