"Frozen" fans have speculated if Elsa is gay, some even going so far as to qualify "Let It Go", the theme song, of a hymn that will be released.
In an interview with Huffington Post, writer and co-director Jennifer Lee has said she has heard the speculations, and “we’ll see where we go.” she said:
I love everything people are saying [and] people are thinking about with our film ― that it’s creating dialogue, that Elsa is this wonderful character that speaks to so many people. It means the world to us that we’re part of these conversations.
Where we’re going with it, we have tons of conversations about it, and we’re really conscientious about these things. For me … Elsa’s every day telling me where she needs to go, and she’ll continue to tell us. I always write from character-out, and where Elsa is and what Elsa’s doing in her life, she’s telling me every day. We’ll see where we go.
The #GiveElsaAGirlfriend campaign had already gained significant attention, with fans hoping Disney would make Elsa its first major princess with a same-sex romantic relationship.
But there was a plot twist.
When Frozen II eventually arrived in 2019, Elsa didn't get a girlfriend — or a boyfriend.
Jennifer Lee explained that the filmmakers had explored Elsa's character deeply and concluded that she simply wasn't ready for a relationship. Her story in the sequel was about understanding her powers, her identity and where she belonged.
Elsa's story, at least in Frozen II, wasn't about finding someone to love.
It was about finding herself.
When fans become deeply attached to a fictional character, how much should the audience influence where that character's story goes?
Do audiences sometimes become so invested in what a character represents that they start expecting the character to become something the writers never intended?
Would you have preferred Elsa to have a girlfriend in Frozen II, or did keeping her story centred on herself make more sense?
