2 LAPD Officers Sentenced To 25 Years For Sexually Assaulting Women While On Duty

Two Los Angeles police officers were sentenced to 25 years in prison for sexually assaulting women while on duty. James Nichols, 46, and Luis Valenzuela, 45, have not challenged the charges of rape and sexual assault against four women between 2008 and 2011. On Monday, when they were going to be tried for rape and forced copulation, the two men, police partners, agreed to plea agreements and a 25-year prison sentence to avoid trial and the possibility of living in prison. The Los Angeles District Attorney's Office reports that the victims assaulted police aged 19 to 34 and all were involved in drug-related investigations. At least one of the victims served as an informant to the police. The women accused the police of pushing them to commit sexual acts to avoid going to prison, claiming that they had been attacked in alleyways, apartments and the police patrol car. One victim reported being twice sexually assaulted twice by Nichols, once by Valenzuela and once by both officers, all over a period of approximately 18 months. Another woman accused Valenzuela of assaulting her with a firearm. Since his arrest in February 2016, Nichols and Valenzuela are still in prison. Both were placed on unpaid leave by the LAPD in 2013 and were relieved of their duties. The plea agreement they accepted would have paved the way for their formal dismissal. Last year, Los Angeles City Council agreed to pay nearly $ 2 million to settle lawsuits filed by women.
