Peju Alatise, a Nigerian artist is the 2017 receiver of the prestigious FNB Art Prize, ARTTHROB reports.
The FNB Joburg Art Fair, according to their website, is Africa’s leading art fair focused on contemporary art from the continent and diaspora.
With this, Peju joins Nolan Oswald Dennis from South Africa, who is also a recipient of the prize.
Asides getting a cash prize, she also has the opportunity to create a new work that will be displayed in a special place at the FNB JoburgArtFair in September.
With a background in architecture, Peju is a mixed-medium artist, poet and published writer, whose work has gained global attention.
Peju intends to deal with social, political and gender-related issues through her work , which also talks about the joys and pain of womanhood in modern-life-African traditions.
Bola Asiru, the founder of Red Door Gallery, one of the leading galleries based in Lagos, who nominated Peju for the prize, explained that, her work resonated with societal account on the realities of life in Africa.
One of the judges, Nicole Siegenthaler, while describing Peju’s work explained that it stood out from the rest.
