Former South Korean President Lee Myung-bak has been sentenced to 15 years in jail at a Seoul court on Friday for charges of bribe, embezzlement and abuse of power, and was also ordered to pay a $ 13 billion gain ($ 11.5m, £ 8.8m) fine.
Lee becomes the fourth South Korean leader to be jailed, following his immediate successor, Park Guen-hye was sentenced to 33 years in prison in April. Lee was not present in the sentence, blaming his poor health. Judge at the District Court in Seoul said that "the severe punishment for the accused is inevitable" because of the serious nature of the crimes. The former president was accused of accepting billions of large Samsung electronics firm in exchange for the forgiveness of its chairman, Lee Kun-hee. Samsung has denied the charges. The ties between political leaders and large family conglomerates known as chaebols have often been under scrutiny or were at the center of criminal accusations.
