Betty Irabor Educates On The Disease Called Myasthenia Gravis

Betty Irabor shared the story of a lawyer, Amaka Orakwue, who lives with Myasthenia and still goes about her normal life despite  the ailment. She also shared what the ailment is all about while encouraging people who notice they have the symptoms to talk to her.
She wrote,
One brave woman.. Living with myasthenia.
I am so crushing on @makusbaby ahead of Tmor .. Met this beautiful soul when I got drafted into my church harvest committee weeks ago. Very brilliant lawyer with a PHD in view. She looked like she had no care in the world until she opened up on living with Myasthenia gravis. What’s that?
She described it thus; it Is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disease that causes rapid fatigue and weakness in the skeletal muscles, which are responsible for breathing and moving parts of the body, including the arms and legs. The name myasthenia gravis, which is Latin and Greek in origin, means “grave, or serious, muscle weakness.”
Myasthenia gravis is not inherited nor is it contagious. Because weakness is a common symptom of many other disorders, the diagnosis of myasthenia gravis is often missed or delayed (sometimes up to two years) in people who experience mild weakness or in those individuals whose weakness is restricted to only a few muscles.
A myasthenic crisis is a medical emergency that occurs when the muscles that control breathing weaken to the point where individuals require a ventilator to help them breathe.

Symptoms may include:
drooping of one or both eyelids (ptosis)
blurred or double vision (diplopia) due to weakness of the muscles that control eye movements
a change in facial expression
difficulty swallowing
shortness of breath
impaired speech (dysarthria)
weakness in the arms, hands, fingers, legs, and neck.

Even though it is so physically, financially, emotionally and mentally draining Amaka just goes Abt as if she has no care in the world..,..we wish her well.
