Angola's new President, João Lourenco, takes swift moves to take over the power of his predecessor Jose Eduardo dos Santos, pushing some of his key allies and promising to fight the monopoly under the control of a family that has led Angola for four decades.
Dos Santos, 75, defeated Lourenco, 63, to succeed when he passed away last month after 38 years in power, prompting critics to suggest a little-known newcomer to be the doll of the Dominant Family dos Santos.
But analysts, diplomats and politicians were surprised at Lourenco trying to take over some of the firm interests that control the third largest economy in Sub-Saharan Africa and the second largest oil exporter.
The heavyweights from the previous administration, such as Vice President Manuel Vicente and Dr. Manuel "Kopelipa" Hélder Vieira Dias Jr, have been found out of business.
Dos Santos still has significant power as MPLA ruling party leader, and key posts such as the finance minister and central bank governor have not yet touched.
But in the vital oil sector, responsible for 75 percent of government revenue, Lourenco has lowered control over the daughter of Santos, Isabel, who runs the national oil company Sonangol.
This month, Lourencho named Carlos Saturnino, who last year fired Isabel dos Santos as state secretary for oil, technically higher than his old boss.
"This was unexpected at this early stage," said Marcolino Moco, former Angolan prime minister and critic Jose Eduardo dos Santos.
"It's still very early, but Lourenco sends a signal that the time of overtime Santos will not continue."
Isabel dos Santos, the wealthiest African woman, denied any tension with Lourenco, announcing to Reuters last week that their views were in "full compliance."
