Gay Rights Activist, Aderonke Apata Granted Asylum After 13 Years In The UK

Aderonke Apata got granted asylum after 13 years in the UK.Aderonke has been a  gay rights activist, receiving a nomination for an LGBT Role Model Award as well as an Attitude Pride Award for her activism.

Her application was rejected for the second time in 2015 after the judge said he did not believe she was a lesbian.

In a chat with The Independent, Aderonke said she was overwhelmed with gladness but angry that there are other LGBTI people seeking asylum facing the same fear of deportation that I had just overcome.
“I was just crying on the phone with my solicitor when he broke the news to me. I must have embarrassed him. I wasn’t assimilating all of the information he was giving to me on the phone as I was crying and singing.”
She pledged to continue her work as an activist through the African Rainbow Family community group that she founded.
Aderonke said the Home Office treated her in dehumanising and demeaning way, while demanding that LGBTI people should be given a better treatment.
According to her, The Home Office needs stop the ‘proof of sexuality’ policy as LGBTI people seeking asylum in the UK only want to be treated with fairness, dignity and humanity.
“Having been forced to flee by hate and intolerance at home, being branded a liar by the Home Office is demeaning and cruel for LGBTI people seeking asylum. I hope the Home Office will look back, reflect on my case and treat everyone with the decency and respect they deserve,” she said
