Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has reignited conversations about polygamy after publicly declaring that having multiple wives is not a sin, citing biblical examples to support his position.
The actor shared his views on X on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, while reacting to the news of American pastor Israel Ford's second marriage.
“POLYGAMY IS NOT A SIN,” Yul declared.
He went on to argue that several prominent men in the Bible had multiple wives without being condemned by God.
“Even in the bible, many great men there had many wives and God never had issues with them. He was even willing to give them more,” he wrote.
The actor took his argument further, suggesting that some men are naturally destined to marry more than one woman but settle for monogamy because they do not understand their purpose or fear society's judgement.
He wrote:
“Today, many men are destined to have many wives but because they don’t know who they are and scared of what society will say they end up having just one and life doesn’t seem to be working for them.”
Yul subsequently expressed agreement with Pastor Ford's position, adding: “I totally agree. It is the will of God.”
His statement followed the announcement by US-based pastor Israel Ford of LifeWorks Church in Wickliffe, Ohio, who introduced Shakayla Ford as his second wife during a church service on October 25.
Ford appeared alongside his first wife, Lydia Ford, during the announcement and defended his interpretation of biblical marriage, arguing that Christianity does not necessarily prohibit a man from having more than one wife.
The pastor's decision generated considerable discussion online, with supporters and critics debating whether polygamy is compatible with Christian teachings.
Freedom of religion does not give someone an exemption from laws prohibiting polygamous marriage. The US Supreme Court addressed this in Reynolds v. United States (1879).
A pastor can publicly announce or celebrate a second religious marriage, but that does not mean the United States legally recognises him as having two wives.
Yul's comments have attracted additional attention because of his own marital history.
In April 2022, the actor publicly announced that he had married actress Judy Austin as his second wife. The announcement generated widespread controversy and public discussion about his marriage to his first wife, May Edochie.
Since then, Yul has repeatedly defended his position on polygamy, making the subject a recurring part of his social media conversations.
Yul's declaration touches on a long-standing disagreement about biblical marriage.
The Bible contains accounts of men who had multiple wives, including Abraham, Jacob, David and Solomon. However, the presence of polygamous marriages in biblical narratives does not, by itself, settle the question of whether Christianity endorses the practice.
Different Christian denominations interpret biblical teachings on marriage differently. Many churches uphold monogamy as the Christian ideal, while others distinguish between the historical practice of polygamy and the requirements they believe apply to Christian marriage today.
Yul's comments have therefore reopened a conversation that goes beyond his personal circumstances, raising questions about scripture, religious interpretation, marriage and cultural expectations.
Is polygamy a matter of personal choice, biblical permission or religious conviction?
