Jasmine Guy is speaking out after her return to television prompted online discussions about her appearance, shifting attention from nostalgia to the pressure women face to remain youthful.
The actress, now 64, reprised her iconic role as Whitley Gilbert in Netflix’s A Different World revival, which premiered on September 24, 2026. While many viewers welcomed the return of the beloved characters, some social media users focused on how Guy looked nearly four decades after the original sitcom debuted.
Rather than allowing the conversation to define her comeback, Guy shared a message about aging, self-acceptance and the unrealistic expectations placed on women.
In an Instagram post on September 28, Guy addressed the harshness of online commentary directed at women as they grow older.
“The internet can be brutal to women as we grow older,” she wrote, observing that society encourages women to celebrate life while criticising the visible signs of having lived it.
She continued: “Growing older brings change, and I won't pretend every change is easy. But beauty, style, and joy don't have an expiration date.”
Guy encouraged people to spend less time judging themselves and one another and more time loving, making memories and enjoying life. Her message received supportive responses from fans and fellow public figures, including Tina Knowles.
Guy first became widely recognised as Whitley Gilbert on A Different World, which originally aired from 1987 to 1993.
Back then, she was portraying a young college student. Today, she is returning to that fictional world as a mature woman, reflecting the passage of time experienced by both the cast and the audience.
The revival gives viewers an opportunity to reconnect with characters they remember from decades ago. But the reaction to Guy also illustrates how quickly conversations about a woman's professional return can become discussions about her physical appearance.
The expectation that a celebrity should look exactly as she did in her twenties is unrealistic. Aging changes faces, bodies and personal style, and those changes do not erase an individual's talent, accomplishments or cultural impact.
Jasmine Guy's response raises a question that extends beyond one actress: Why are women often praised for looking young but criticised when they visibly grow older?
Celebrity culture frequently celebrates youthful appearances while placing older women under intense scrutiny. Some are criticised for looking older, while others face judgment for cosmetic procedures intended to maintain a youthful appearance.
That creates a difficult standard to satisfy. Women can be judged whether they embrace natural changes or choose to alter their appearance.
Guy's message does not require everyone to share the same beauty preferences. Instead, it challenges the idea that a woman's age should become a reason to ridicule her.
The A Different World revival is also a reminder that the passage of time is part of life.
Audiences who watched the original series have grown older alongside its cast. The return of familiar characters offers an opportunity to see how their stories have developed rather than expecting everyone to remain frozen in the era when the show first aired.
Guy's career extends well beyond Whitley Gilbert, including television, film and theatre work. She also won an Emmy in 2023 for her performance in Chronicles of Jessica Wu.
Aging is not a personal failure. When the conversation surrounding a woman's return to the screen becomes dominated by whether she still looks young, it is worth asking whether society is paying attention to her contribution—or simply measuring her against an image from the past.
Do you think society places too much pressure on female celebrities to look young, or is public discussion about celebrity appearances simply part of fame?
