Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland Celebrate $14 Million Housing Project Providing Homes for 31 People in Houston

Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland are celebrating a major milestone in their hometown of Houston, Texas, following the opening of the Knowles-Rowland House, a $13.96 million housing development designed to help people experiencing chronic homelessness.

The three-story building provides 31 permanent supportive housing units, offering residents more than a place to live. The development also connects residents with services intended to support their long-term stability, including mental health counselling, case management, life-skills training and access to food assistance.

The opening ceremony took place on October 13, 2026, with Beyoncé making a surprise appearance alongside Kelly Rowland, her mother Tina Knowles and her daughters, Blue Ivy and Rumi. The project was officially announced as open on October 14.

Inside the $13.96 Million Knowles-Rowland House

Located at 2019 Crawford Street in Houston's Midtown neighbourhood, the development transforms the site of the former Knowles-Rowland Center for Youth into permanent supportive housing.

The original centre opened in 1999 with support from Tina Knowles, Mathew Knowles, Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland. It served young people, older adults and people needing temporary shelter before a fire heavily damaged the building in March 2021.

The redevelopment preserves the site's community-focused purpose while expanding its role in addressing homelessness.

Sixteen of the 31 apartments have accommodations designed for people with mobility or sensory impairments. Residents are also expected to receive access to support services through Temenos Community Development Corporation, an organisation affiliated with Bread of Life.

Although Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland are closely associated with the project's history and name, the $13.96 million development was financed through a coalition of public and private partners.

The funding partners include the Harris County Housing Finance Corporation, B1 Bank, Rice Management Company, the AIC CEI-Boulos Opportunity Fund and an Affordable Housing Program grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas.

The project also receives support through the US Department of Housing and Urban Development's Project-Based Voucher programme, which subsidises residents' rents.

The development was delivered by Bread of Life, a Houston nonprofit organisation focused on housing, hunger relief and support for underserved communities.

The opening carried personal significance for Beyoncé, who grew up attending St. John's Downtown Church, where the ceremony was held.

Speaking at the event, she reflected on the church's influence on her life and expressed gratitude to pastors Rudy and Juanita Rasmus for their support and prayers.

Her appearance highlighted a connection between her childhood community and a project intended to provide housing stability for vulnerable residents.

Homelessness involves more than the absence of a roof. People experiencing long-term homelessness may also face barriers involving mental health, employment, healthcare and access to essential services.

Permanent supportive housing combines accommodation with ongoing assistance intended to help residents remain housed and rebuild stability.

By providing 31 apartments alongside support services, the Knowles-Rowland House represents a community investment that extends beyond the construction of a building.

Residents are expected to begin moving into their new homes on November 1, 2026.

Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland's connection to the Knowles-Rowland House reflects a philanthropic relationship with Houston that began decades ago.

The project's significance lies not simply in its nearly $14 million price tag, but in how an established community initiative has been transformed into permanent housing for people facing chronic homelessness.

It also illustrates how philanthropy, government funding, private investment and nonprofit organisations can work together to address a persistent social challenge.

What do you think makes the greatest difference in tackling homelessness: providing affordable housing, offering long-term support services, or combining both?
