Jennifer Lopez was originally supposed to be part of Madonna and Britney Spears’ 2003 MTV VMAs performance, and she was supposed to be one of Madonna’s “brides.”
Lopez has confirmed that she, Madonna and Britney actually rehearsed together at Madonna’s home. She was filming Shall We Dance? in Canada and couldn’t get released from the production, so she had to drop out. Christina Aguilera then took her place.
And the kiss was part of Madonna’s plan. In a 2026 interview, Lopez explained that they did not actually rehearse the kiss, but Madonna had told them that was what she wanted to do. Madonna was playing the groom, while Britney and the other singer were the brides.
