Nollywood has once again proven that when it comes to mass mobilization and global entertainment statements, Lagos does it bigger than anyone else. The gritty crime thriller Black Market officially etched its name into the global history books by breaking the Guinness World Record for the largest attendance at a film screening in a single location.
Smashing the Global Record at TBS
In an unprecedented display of cinema culture, a staggering 51,000 people gathered simultaneously at the iconic Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) in Lagos to watch the blockbuster screening.Key teams from Rixel Studios, FilmOne Studios, Signet Ring Studios, and Switch Visuals Production, who spearheaded the historic logistics.
The massive turnout completely obliterated the previous global benchmark of 43,624 people, which had been held since 2015 by the Philippine biographical film Felix Manalo at the Philippine Arena. Distributed by FilmOne Studios and driven by a collaboration between Switch Visuals Productions, Rixel Studios, and Signet Ring Studios, the event turned into a monumental festival of film, music, and national pride.
Inside the Record-Breaking Thriller
Directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay and co-written by Gimsay alongside Abdul Tijani-Ahmed, Black Market is a high-stakes crime thriller that dives deep into the dark underworld of cross-border smuggling.
The plot follows five women whose lives are thrown into absolute turmoil after the daughter of one of them is kidnapped. Backed by an A-list ensemble cast featuring Lateef Adedimeji, Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Ibrahim Yekini, Scarlet Gomez, Omowunmi Dada, Teniola Aladese, Susan Pwajok, and Uzor Arukwe, the film combines emotional depth with pulse-pounding action that kept tens of thousands glued to the giant screen under the Lagos night sky.
"I was at Tafawa Balewa Square this evening... Dada also described the production journey as stressful but rewarding, saying the record attempt had been part of the project's plan from the outset."

As official Guinness World Records verifiers confirmed the final attendance numbers, the historic night proved that African cinema is entering an explosive new era of record-shattering audience engagement.
With Black Market drawing a jaw-dropping 51,000 fans to Tafawa Balewa Square to shatter a global cinematic record, do you think massive open-air mega-screenings are the future of Nollywood blockbusters, or is traditional cinema hall distribution still king?
