WhatsApp is rolling out one of its biggest privacy updates yet, allowing users to communicate using unique usernames instead of revealing their personal phone numbers to new contacts. The feature is designed to give people more control over who can reach them while making it easier to connect without exchanging sensitive contact information.
With the new system, users can reserve a unique username through Settings > Account > Username before the feature becomes widely available. Once enabled, new people who contact you through your username will no longer see your phone number, adding an extra layer of privacy for conversations with classmates, customers, event attendees, or people you meet online.
Unlike traditional social media platforms, WhatsApp will not have a public username directory or search suggestions. To start a conversation, someone must know your exact username, helping reduce unwanted messages and making it more difficult for strangers to discover your account. The company is also introducing an optional "username key," allowing users to require an additional code before someone can message them through their username.
WhatsApp says the feature is intended to strengthen privacy while maintaining the app's end-to-end encryption. Phone numbers will still be required to create a WhatsApp account, but users will have the option to keep that number hidden from new contacts once usernames are fully rolled out.
The company has already begun allowing users to reserve usernames, with the global rollout expected to continue over the coming months. Existing creators, businesses, and organizations may also be able to claim usernames that match their Instagram or Facebook handles, helping maintain a consistent online identity across Meta's platforms.
As of now, WhatsApp does not allow people to chat using only a username while keeping their phone number completely private.
