KABBA, KOGI STATE — Suspected bandits have killed a vice principal, a six-year-old boy, and another resident during a deadly attack on Iluke Bunu community in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, threw residents into panic as heavily armed gunmen reportedly stormed the community and targeted Government Secondary School, Iluke Bunu.

According to local sources, the attackers arrived in large numbers on motorcycles and began shooting sporadically, forcing residents to flee for safety. Among those killed was the vice principal of the secondary school, whose death has sparked outrage and renewed concerns over insecurity in rural communities.

Residents said the gunmen appeared to be attempting a mass abduction, including students preparing for examinations, but security operatives responded swiftly and engaged the attackers in a gun battle.

The intervention by security personnel reportedly prevented the bandits from carrying out a large-scale kidnapping operation. However, the attack left three people dead and several others traumatized.

Community leaders have called on the Kogi State Government and security agencies to strengthen security around schools and vulnerable communities to prevent future attacks.

The latest incident adds to the growing security challenges facing several parts of the country, where armed groups have increasingly targeted schools and rural settlements for kidnappings and ransom operations.
