Nollywood actor Daniel Etim-Effiong has revealed a deeply personal family history involving his father’s arrest during Nigeria’s military era under General Ibrahim Babangida. Speaking on the Diary of a Naija Girl podcast, he explained that his father, a military officer, was implicated in an alleged coup plot when he was just a baby.
He recounted that the trouble began when his father’s close military associate was arrested and allegedly mentioned him during interrogation, which led to his own arrest, trial, and conviction in connection with the case. According to Etim-Effiong, his father was sentenced to death by firing squad but miraculously survived the execution.
The actor further shared that the experience had a lasting emotional impact on his family, especially because they lived for years under the shadow of that military-era trauma. His father was eventually released and later granted a presidential pardon decades after the incident.
