Why We Keep Punishing People for Yesterday’s Tweets

Nigerians are relentless. One wrong move, one misunderstood word, and you’re a target forever.
OAP Dotun recently called out the online mob targeting singer Adekunle Gold — all because of tweets his wife, Simi, shared years ago. Old posts, resurrected, dissected, and weaponized against someone who had nothing to do with them.

Think about that. A husband being judged for things his wife posted. Years ago. Things she might not even stand by today. And yet, the internet refuses to forget.
It’s easy to scroll, click “retweet,” and feel morally superior. It’s harder to pause and consider how much of this endless outrage actually serves justice — and how much is just performative cruelty.

Dotun’s point is simple, but uncomfortable: we are raising a culture of perpetual punishment, where the past is never past, and every mistake is a life sentence for anyone associated.
And maybe the bigger question is this:
When will we stop judging people for yesterday’s words and start holding ourselves accountable for today’s behavior?
