EFCC arraigns Babafemi Sarumi over N206 million fraud

#jaiyeorie

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Sarumi Samusideen Babafemi — CEO of 606 Autos, 606 Music, and Splash Off Entertainment — alongside those three companies, on charges linked to an alleged ₦206 million fraud involving conspiracy, concealment and transfer of proceeds from unlawful activities between 2013 and 2018.

Babafemi wasn’t acting alone in the narrative the agency laid before the Special Offences Court in Ikeja. The EFCC alleges he conspired with social media celebrity Ismaila Mustapha (Mompha) — currently at large — and others, to funnel funds through corporate entities in ways that masked their true origin.

At first glance, this feels like another chapter in Nigeria’s long accounting with financial crime and celebrity networks. But beneath the names and millions lies a deeper pattern: when influence meets opacity, questions about accountability tend to follow. These aren’t isolated incidents; they are part of an ongoing tension between informal power structures and formal law enforcement. The structures that allowed rapid accumulation of wealth — legal or otherwise — also create shadows where proof and perception blur.
