Friends and family gathered to surprise Debby Obanikoro of DOS clothings for her birthday at Zaza upscale lounge, with Lateefah Laniyan of Tash Bistro, Nnenna Okoye of Youtopia beauty, Derin from Isale Eko,Bimbo Oladapo of MamaCass and Lami Shonekan among those present.
The gathering was intimate, but the lovely part of a birthday surprise is rarely the Michael Jackson type dancer or the cake or the room. It is the decision to show up.
In an era where friendships are often maintained through messages, likes and fleeting digital interactions, physically gathering for someone carries a different kind of weight.
Birthdays can quietly map a person’s social world — the relationships that have survived changing seasons, distance, careers and different versions of adulthood.
For public-facing people especially, friendship can easily become confused with proximity. Being around someone is not necessarily the same as being for someone.
A surprise birthday reverses that dynamic. For a few hours, the attention is not about work, visibility or what anyone can gain from the relationship. It is simply: we remembered you, and we came.
What does a person’s circle look like when there is nothing to promote?
And years from now, which will matter more — the things we accumulated, or the people who made the effort to be present?
Jaiyeorie — this is why it matters.
