Solange Knowles has added another dimension to her artistic career, making her debut as a composer for the New York City Ballet at its Fall Fashion Gala on September 28, 2022.
The Grammy-winning singer and multidisciplinary artist composed an original score, Villanelle for Times, for Play Time, a ballet choreographed by Gianna Reisen. The performance took place at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center in New York City, bringing together contemporary music, choreography and fashion.
The production featured costumes by designer Alejandro Gómez Palomo of Palomo Spain, while Solange's composition was performed by members of the New York City Ballet Orchestra alongside musicians from her own creative circle. The collaboration marked a significant expansion of her work beyond recording and performing music.
Her achievement also carried historical significance. Solange became the second Black woman to have an original score commissioned by the New York City Ballet, following Colombian-Canadian artist Lido Pimienta. The milestone placed her within an artistic institution traditionally associated with classical music and ballet, while highlighting the possibilities for Black women to shape its creative direction.
Solange's ballet debut was more than a celebrity appearance at a prestigious cultural event. It represented a shift in how her artistry could be experienced.
Known for projects that blend music, visual art, identity and experimental performance, she entered ballet not simply as a famous musician lending her name to a production, but as a composer contributing original work to the art form.
The collaboration also demonstrates how established cultural institutions can create space for artists whose creative identities extend beyond traditional categories.
Solange is building a creative identity that cannot be contained by one industry.
Her transition from recording artist to ballet composer reveals a distinction between celebrity and artistic influence. Celebrity brings recognition into a room; artistic contribution gives an individual a role in shaping what happens inside it.
At Lincoln Center, Solange was not simply attending ballet's fashionable gathering. She was helping create the work being presented.
When an artist enters a new cultural space, are they borrowing its prestige—or expanding what that space can become?
