Pastor Williams Kumuyi, the founder and general superintendent of Deeper Life Bible Church, has warned ushers in his church to stop requiring women to cover their heads. He emphasizes that this causes heat in the hair and causes it to emit odor.
The 81-year-old esteemed man of God called the behavior embarrassing and pleaded with ushers to stop it.
He bemoaned the fact that many Christians misinterpret the Bible, which is turning people away from the church.
The comments were made by Kumuyi in a sermon posted on the Facebook page of the Church Times-recognized Ekiti State Deeper Life Church.
He claims that
“Somebody is coming to our church for the first time. And she happens to be a lady not covering her head. We ask the person to cover her head before coming in.
We don’t know whether the person does not even know God. We confront her out there before she even enters the church. We don’t know if she does not know how to pray or prophesy. But we impose rules on her.
If I were the person, I would wonder what kind of church is this? If they treat me like a primary school girl, that will be my last time coming to the church.”
The minister gave an explanation of 1 Corinthians 11:5, which focuses on women's head coverings.
According to him, the Bible only specifies that women's heads should be covered when praying or prophesying.
Additionally, he questioned why some church members would wear head coverings for nearly 20 hours each day, claiming that many did so because of how they looked.
The cleric went on to say that because of constant covering, the hair would heat up and release an odor.
According to him, women who engage in such behavior enslave themselves since they have never learned to read.
