Usain Bolt is the most recent athlete to try to copyright a representation of his distinctive victory celebration posture.


The eight-time Olympic champion has submitted an application to the US Patent and Trademark Office for an image of the famous "Lightning Bolt" maneuver, in which he leans back while raising one arm in the air.


Bolt, who still holds the 100- and 200-meter world records and was the undisputed Olympic champion in those events from 2008 to 2016, is now retired, but it's clear that he still wants to capitalize on the instantly recognizable gesture for a variety of goods and brands.

Now 36, Bolt filed his application on August 17 for the depiction of pose.
“The mark consists of the silhouette of a man in a distinctive pose, with one arm bent and pointing to the head, and the other arm raised and pointing upward,” the trademark application states. The court filing states that he intends to use the image on items which include clothing, jewellery and shoes, as well as restaurants and sports bars.
